Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 17, 2010 02:12PM
i was wondering if there is any good sites or good places to buy tractors that are good to build into puller. i'm not real partial to ay brand. just wouold like to find ones that are burnt or damanage. Or is it easier to just buy the tractor in pieces motor trans rear axle etc. i want to build a light super

Better off to buy one already built, as long as you have a good idea what you are getting.

It sounds good in theory. But i'm not much of a fan on spening good money on some one elses head acke. It's hard to tel for sure what your getting if your not real familure with the tractor. Also most the good ones bring a premium. Just my thoughts

Seen this question asked on here before. The answer that made the most sense to me was buying a tractor after seeing it pull. That way you can see it perform and none of the goodies can be taken off. It also seems that it is a lot cheaper to buy an existing tractor, many times at quite a bit less than what the owner put in to it, than to build one yourself.

If money isn't a huge concern, you can do most of the work building it yourself and have fun working out the bugs.

The final option is to pay someone else to build it, but the labor cost adds up tremendously.

dont buy a tractor, just buy rearend and complete engine from salvage yard. you will make frame rails, front axle and buy your sheetmetal. dont waste money on buying a tractor to start off with.

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 17, 2010 02:40PM
buy one already built they will nickel & dime you to death you will spend $50.000.00 just to get started it ain`t cheap thats for sure Alky or Diesel there both expensive You need to spend it and build it right the first time lots of parts to get together big job if its your first tractor may want to try limited lite super stock might be a little easier to figure out single charger

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 18, 2010 02:41AM
You can buy a puller ready to hook for about half of what it costs to build one. Run a want ad on here telling what you are looking for..I've seen pullers build a new tractor and fight it for years trying to make it run right. There are several near me like this.

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 19, 2010 11:18AM
If you want to build a light super dont even mess with a cast tractor buy a component chassis. You can find used component chassis for cheeper that you could build a cast tractor buy the time you buy a rear end housing, cage, tie bars, frame ralls, wheely bars, ect ect its just cheeper to start with a component and ull have a way better tractor.

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 19, 2010 03:35PM
Where? and how safe is it?

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 19, 2010 07:21PM
Anywhere, and it'll be MUCH safer than almost ANY hollowed out cast rear tractor currently running very hard in LSS.

Re: Where to get a tractor to build a puller February 20, 2010 02:35AM
But unfortunitly if you wanna pull locally some of the associations aren't letting you go that way yet.

He never said if he was building a national level LSS. Lots of state organizations still dont allow component tractors in LSS. I'm not capable of building a component chassis and sure couldnt afford to hire one built.I pull a state level LSS and I must have the stock transmission and rear end housings which is fine with me.

Re: Think About This February 20, 2010 05:10AM
Well said and I couldn't agree more. Just because the technology is available does not mean everyone has to have it or they should quit pulling.

Re: Think About This February 24, 2010 03:29PM
you are correct. my local organization does not allow compent tractors yet. They allow 360ci, 2 chargers and you have to run the OEM cast head. the weight is 6100lbs. does anyone have any good ideas for a tractor to build for this. I don't have the money to go out and buy a built one so my plan is to start buying what i need when i have money and hopefully in a few years have it together. I have always like a 4010 but i have been looking at olivers ford and allis so i am open to anything

There is a very strong running alky Deere in MO running the 359 under those same rules. If they'll let you put a 359 Cummins in an Olly that would probably be a strong runner too.

There was a Deere chassis in Ky / Tn setup for the 329 / 359 availible very reasonable a couple of years ago - not sure what happened to it.

Re: Think About This February 25, 2010 05:10AM
Have a John Deere 2840 with two blocks 329 and 414, also have 30.5 x 32 tires on drussel rims, sheet metal. Do you want to run diesel or alcohol?

Re: Think About This February 25, 2010 06:58AM
i want to run alcohol

Re: Think About This February 25, 2010 08:25AM
I think in that CI range on alcohol I would be leaning towards the 5.9 cummins .

Re: Think About This February 25, 2010 11:54AM

It would be interesting to see the 414/6.8L decubed.. Especially on Alky...

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 05:42AM
I'm not sure what you mean? Both 359 & 414 have 4.19 bore. The diff is 4.33 vs 5.0 stroke so the 359 is already a decubed 414.

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 08:17AM
what tractor has the 359 or the 414 block in it

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 05:48PM
The 6.8L has a taller deck height, and larger rod journals.. but I guess if you are destroking it.. those things might not be something to look at...
The 359 was also in some of the utility tractors.. 2950, 55 and 31's.. a few other that size.. also in some smaller combines, and cotton stripers.. later one's used the 6.8L engine.. early 7000's used both the 5.9L (359) and the 6.8L, depending on the model..

Main Bearing Bore Centerline-to-Cylinder Block Top Deck (3029/4039/6059) Minimum Distance 301.98 mm (11.889 in.)
Main Bearing Bore Centerline-to-Cylinder Block Top Deck (4045/6068) Minimum Distance 337.87 mm (13.302 in.)

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 08:23AM
The ideal tractor to build would be a IH 686 if you are open minded enough and don't hate IH too bad!

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 08:53AM
i'm open minded. whats the best way to go about finding a tractor? seems like if you buy a running one your kind of wasting your money just to tear it a part. but not sure where to find junk ones at either

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 01:24PM
The 329 came in the 4030, the 2840 and the 6620 combines for starters. The 414 was a industrial engine , graders for instance. Some 4050 's had the 359 turbo which is basically the same as the 329, if I got my JD history correct

Re: Think About This February 26, 2010 02:03PM
6.8L or (414) are used in 7400 and 7600 like sized tractors. Early 9400 combines had the 359T and later had the 6.8L or (414). 4400 combines have the 329 along with some 6600 combines and so did the 4030 tractor and 2840 but 2940 3150 3155 has a 359. 4420 combines have a 359. And yes some 4050 tractors have a 359T in them as well. There are more models that use these engines but this should give you a good idea.

Re: Think About This February 27, 2010 04:16PM
edfenne , we have that rearend for the 2840 and blocks and tires, and have a light super stock for sale also.
