just noticed on allin photography site,that this ol-88,has the flow path reversed from the standard oliver 310.in the past it was always a standard flowpath head.the 478 has both intake and exhaust on the same side.so that isnt the reason.could this be using a cummins in this class.

TRI STATE / BMTTPA NA SS class; olivers must run 310 or 451 waukasha, or may run 478 hercules. Cummins is not legal for our class.

Bill was running a 310 Diesel head (crossflow) but has has switched the intake/exhaust arrangements.

That is correct, that is what he is still running. Not running a 478, although you can.

It is great to see this group making changes. They are a fun beginner class to watch, but the lack of young blood and new pulling machines concerned me about where they were headed. They have some of the best color in their class when you compare them to anyone. It will be interesting to see if those numbers come up once these new engine changes are more widely known.

since diesel heads can be ran on gas,why doesnt nobody use the cat with ng heads.i would think this should be very competitive.

It would be alot better class for competitiors and beginners if there was a 400cid limit on it and 1000lbs less weight. Easier on eveything and everyone.

This class is anything but a beginner class. The amount of money shelled out to build a winning tractor in that class is staggering. Call up Ron Shipman and ask him to build you the latest and greatest moline and see what the price tag is. Ask Billy Downing to build you a carbon copy of his tractor. I personally want to go fast if I am going to shell out that much money. Without the right rules in place it will die eventually. I can not speak for other places, but if it is anything like it is here in PA, it is unfortunatly going to die due to the lack of structure.

We used to have 4500, 5500, 7000, 8500 Non-Turbo/Naturally aspirated super stock sanctioned by interstate, with a good following of equipment. We have lost more tractors than we could ever hope to gain back again because of this lack of structure. Interstate dropped the class as a points class about 10-11 years ago. The class continues to loose pullers to other classes that they might have gained because of the lack of structure. Sure currently there are 3 good looking and good running tractors and there are 3-4 ok running and looking tractors making a total of about 6-7 tractors in the class, with 2-3 new ones slated to appear in the next 1-5 years. It should be interesting to see who and what might show up from other regions for the antique open classes at Keystone. It has always been a free for all cluster. There was never any rhyme or reasoning behind the rules governing which motors people used except for 2 rules. The engine brand had to match the tractor, example a Case had to have any Case motor in it. Sounds reasonable, Case used an 855 cummins. The second was no home made or altered adaptor plates, but that got shot all to hell in the 90's and was basically ignored. The engine switching around was always a cheap way to make some more power. It started off with 301 truck motors in 560's, 310's in Oliver 88's, you know, the acceptable and innocent enough replacments. Then there was a 466 in an M, and a 504 in a 400 case, and so on until we have a case 600 with an 855 cummins in it, that at the time of construction was built following each and every rule that the other competitors in the class were following. So now there is an IH V-8 of some sort coming to combat the case, and there is going to be a case built with a cummins K motor in it. With no cubic inch limit, or rules of any sort that the people are willing to follow and enforce fairly and evenly for everyone the sky is the limit. There are actually 4 rules that the class does go by.

#1 There are no rules (as long as you do not beat Dan Weiner)
#2 18-4-38 tires (but you could probably show up with 24-5-32's as long as you did not beat Dan Weiner)
#3 The best finish you are aloud to have with out scrutiny is a second place (unless you are Dan Weiner, or the guy that happens to be driving his tractor, then of course you may feel free to win without any scrutiny).
#4 Make up any rules as we go to ensure rule number #3 is always the case
