Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 03:17AM
I know this is an off the wall question, but I figured you guys would know the best. The tires I had on my 2006 duramax wore out in 25k miles, they were rated 40K. Trust me the truck doesn't get used hard. I was woundering what brand of tires are guys have luck with? Pulling a trailer, off road, highway... I'm thinking of going from a 245 to a 265, which might help. Of course I got to re program the tranmission. Thanks!

In AT's we have put on a lot of Nitto Terra Grapplers, Hankook RF10's and Toyo's. BFG's are always in the mix but there is a love hate relationship there with some. We dont sell Coopers but I know of guys that like their AT.

If you are thinking about a bigger size have you thought of sticking a 285 8 ply on yours? I have 15,000 miles on my nittos and plowed snow this winter and hauled trailers, and hwy running. Rotated them once and they look good yet for another 20-30k miles. I don't travel much gravel but have guys getting 30K+ on them on alot of gravel travel. They are a black wall only so that is a downfall if you like the white letters.

If you are looking at more of a hyw tire/ride the firestone transforce HT and AT are a popular choice.

Michelin AT/2's Put them on rides like a Cadillac. I have never had bad luck with Michelin.

Just my opinion of course.

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 04:32AM
also bridgestone revo2 AT's have been a popular choice in the 265 -285 size.

I have 265 70 17s on my 2004 cummins, they are BFG rugged terrains, first set went 50000 put 2 coopers on the back, worst tires i ever bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20000 miles, shot, traction wise they were bad too. So put BFGs back on @ 70000 and just love them!

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 06:18AM
watch out when putting 285's on the stock chevy rims they wear out the center fast pulling a trailer. Rims are too narrow. I had good luck with Pro Comp all terrains. Firestone transforce AT's work good also.

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 10:07AM
Just make sure when you do purchase tires they are LT rated and not a P rated tire. The difference is the LT stands for Light Truck, the P stands for passanger tire. Some trucks come with P rated tires making them ride better. A good place to get info also is Tire Rack.com. , they have reviews posted on most of the tires. Another good thing is you can see the different tread patterns, and don't have to drive all over town to see them.

Revo 2's March 29, 2010 01:49PM
I have a Suburban, I pull a big boat trailer a lot. I am on my second set of Revo 2's. The first set went 60,000 miles I changed them because winter was coming. they had another 15,000 of wear left. Mine were P's but the make Lt that have several thousands deeper tread.
Quite
Wear good
excellent snow & rain traction. I have had good luck with them in the mud goose hunting.

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 12:57PM
I would recommend Nitto Terra Grapplers, good tires cheap also. Ive seen bad things from Bridgestone A/T Revo (bad wear).

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 01:17PM
If you stay on the blacktop go with Michelins. If you are off the road at all, go with the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I have got 40-50k out of all three sets of my Nitto's. I am just about ready for another set and they will be Nitto's.

I have a '05 Duramax 2500HD and tow a 35' 5th wheel RV among other trailers and am off of the road plenty too. The only thing that sucks is they are black wall only....

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 28, 2010 11:14PM
I have 70,000 miles on my michlen LTX M/S 285's and they are sill legal for tread depth, and the chip is in my 006 duramax 2500 hd 4 x 4

Just wondering if anyone has tried Yokohama Geolander A/T-S. They seem to get good reviews and cheap price too. I had a set of BFG's TA/KO's (A+ on traction) and only got 18,000 out of them. Now I have Firestone Transforce A/T's (B- on traction)and they have about 35,000(need replaced), and want to try something different.

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 29, 2010 11:45AM
You only got 18,000 miles on a set of BFG? What in the heck were you doing!!!??? Musta been a really really bad set of tires.

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 29, 2010 12:53PM
Yep had yokohama on A/T-S on company truck which were 10 ply. Good wear but suck if you go off the pavement, also kind of rough riding.

Re: Tires For my Duramax - NO Yokohama Geolander March 29, 2010 01:04PM
Thats what I'm replaceing! The Yokohama Geolanders suck, they are rated for 40K, I got 25K and they are shot. I rotated them and ran the correct air pressure. When I first put them on it felt like I was on marbles....I'm going straight and it felt like I could go sideways at any time. After 200 miles the feeling went away. Buyer beware!

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 29, 2010 01:54PM
First few sets were Michlen LTX's 265.. long lasting.. Love the tire.. wanted something a little bigger.. went to the 285s BFG's AT KO's.. Just changed them last week with 74K on them.. they were worn out.. but I was happy with them.. Thought about going to the 285 Michlen's, since they are now available in that size.. but Just went back to the BFG's... I rotated them some.. but mostly watched them wearing.. played with the pressures some.. backs wore even,.. fronts scaloped a little...
2001 Dodge.. 272K.. lots of highway miles..

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 29, 2010 02:49PM

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 29, 2010 03:03PM
Got a set of 285 bfg Mud Terrain KM2s on stock chevy rims and got 30000 on them so far and they get used hard. Lots of gravel, pull 30 foot flat bed with pulling tractors and they will go any where you wana take your truck. Love them plan on running them another 20000!

Re: Tires For my Duramax March 30, 2010 01:04AM
Dick Cepek FC II. I got 70,000 out of a set and they still had tread. The tires look great and wear like iron. The only draw back is that since the compound is so hard they started giving up some grip on wet surfaces after about 40,000. I also ran Nitto Terra Grappler with good success.

Tire test video April 05, 2010 01:49PM
I stumbled across this video concerning the Revo 2's regarding a test on them. They are talking about tires for trucks.
