Which ring and pinion would be best for a 540 single 3x4 charger on IH 1066 .

13/49 3.769 then 2 or 3 teeth over direct
16/49 3.062 then direct or 1 tooth under direct..............maybe

Seems a little fast but you might be right. Eventually will put on a bigger charger so 13/49 might be a good match. How much slower would 13/51 be in direct . Too slow?? Is direct in 13/49 about 20-21:1.

Not to sound too dumb but what do your gear ratios mean? 17:1 vs a 21:1, which is a bigger gear. trying to learn

input shafts turns 21 times when the rear tire makes one revolution thus 21:1 is a slower gear than 17:1

The easy way to explain this is that for a 17:1, the output shaft in the tranny has to spin 17 times to turn the axles one revolution. For a 21:1, it is 21 revolutions and so on. So in this case, 17:1 is faster than 21:1 because the output shaft has to make less revolutions to turn the axles one revolution.

the 13/51 is 22.029 final drive in direct, it's about 4% slower than 13/49.

It depends on what weight class you will be pulling, and also what tire size.

if your 540 engine is making good power it shouldn't be a problem pulling 13/49 in direct, down in ky there are several 3x4 hot air 466's running that ring & pinion @ 8500 and spin out hard at the end.

What type of tracks do you have. I've got about 1150 horses but pull on some tough clay tracks

with that peak hp if your making approx. 2100 ft. lbs somewhere in the mid 2000's (2200-2500) rpm you will be fine, if your not quite there you prob. need the 13/51
