"Old Number 1" (Massey Ferguson 2805)
|
My dad and I were talking couple weeks ago at the Keystone Nationals about pulling tractors he used to enjoy watching many years ago.
One of them he talked about was "Old Number 1". When we got back we looked the tractor up in a old pull magizine from the early 1980's. All we found was a picture and a message under the photo that said: The "Old Number 1" (Massey Ferguson 2805) of Don Berry of Thompson, MO came to Green Bay with four turbos and impressed everyone with tire speed and power. My dad remembers it that the tractor was called "Old Number 1" because it was the first tractor off the assembly line from Massey Ferguson with a V8. Like the serial number on the tractor was 00000001. The tractor came off the assembly line striaght in his shop and turned into a super stock. I was wondering what other people can remember about this tractor and Don Berry. Does anyone have any other pictures. What ever happened to the Tractor? What ever happened to Don Berry? Thanks, |

Yep, that "Red Revolution" Massey was the "Old Number One" back in the day. I still remember taking a picture of that "000001" on the serial number tag. Looks pretty cool, now and then! |

the only thing left from the old tractor is the rearend. But luke miller does still have the old sideplates in his shop, with serial number 000001.
Dannie Kuhns drove the trailblazer for many years, an is now driving a new component prostock, with sheetmetal from a massey ferguson 8480. probably the one of the nicest prostocks out there! ofcourse still with the proud V8 perkins |

It may have been the first 2805, but certainly not the first with V8. The 1155's had them years earlier I believe. |
Re: "Old Number 1" (Massey Ferguson 2805)

the 1150 was a first (I think) |

It was the first to have the 640motor. the 1150 was the first row crop production tractor to have a v8(510). |

Since I live in MO I got to see Don pull quite a few times. The first time I ever saw him pull was in the late 1960's with a 1130 MF.Then he moved up to a 1150 MF,and finally the 2805.At one time his son-in-law pulled the 1150 while Don pulled the 2805.I remember him pulling at the Kansas state fair in the early 1980's and something blew. There was oil all over tractor and some got on Don.It didnt seem to bother him to much. The old 2805 was pretty tempermental but when it wanted to run it was tough to beat. |

The coolest thing I remember about OLD NUMBER 1 was when it was going down the track, full bore, there was as much smoke coming out from under the hood as there was out the stack. Always was fun to watch and usually pulled good too. |

I remember one year he won afew grand national pulls and as a massey fan we were thinking he was going to give the IHs a run in the 12000 ss.I was always curious as to what kind of pump/turbo setup he ran. |

I remember one year at Louisville at the end of a decent run the old gal melted a exhaust manifold completely off the tractor into a puddle on the ground. It was a awsome sight although I don't think Don thought it was that great. I've always heard his 1150 was serial # 1 also but never knew for sure. Does anyone know? |

Dons old MF 1150 went to Steve Roudebush in Noblesville,IN.It became the MF Express(?) Pro Stock that Steve ran for years and did very well with it.Not sure where its at now.Steve used to be a MF dealer down in Noblesville, not sure if he still is.When Don ran it as a SS he finished 3rd in the 12 SS at the 76 Indy Super pull behind Dave Stangle's G-1000 and John Lancaster's AC 210. Just a bit of old pulling trivia here................... |

The last i knew, the old MF Express 1150 is being overhauled to compete in the ITPA PS class. Steve sold it a couple years ago to a fellow about 30 minutes southeast of Tuscola IL.

I remember a "MF Express" that pulled SF with the Outlaws. Is that the same tractor? I think there was a MF tractor called Overdraft too. Wonder what happened to it? |
Re: "Old Number 1" (Massey Ferguson 2805)

Don sold tractor to kuhns equipment, and quit pulling. Tractor came from Massey Ferguson was a demonsrator, with about 200 hours. Everyone thought it was free. NOT. He gave $20,000.00 for it and had to pick it up in Kansas. We worked all winter getting it ready, and really not knowing a whole lot about building one, and finished it up one day before going to Denver. Think it got middle of field first pull, buthad a lot of fun because all of the pullers being so nice. not going to get in to names, because so many, and didnt matter what brand they were pulling. Dont know where tractor is now . heard it left poplar bluff. Don still doing good, 84 years old, and quit farming last year. Still comes out and drives tracter and combine sometimes. Spends winter in Pharr Texas, and winters in centralia MO. |

Pro Stock would be nice; But I would love to see a V8 Massey built into a Diesel Super Stock. Give Esdon Lehn & Brian Shramek a run for there money.
Do you think one would hold together. Carlton Cope's tractor really cranks, could you imagine with more air and fuel; talk about RPMs & Black Smoke!!! Thanks Justin Bennett |
