anyone ever turbo a D301 IH engine? July 13, 2010 04:38AM
trying to build up a D301 for pulling, wondering what size turbo and pump work i should do, 3000rpm max.

There is one for sale currently here on pulloff. I did an advanced search for farmall 560 and it pulled right up. He used a HX 35 Holset Super drag turbo. Perhaps you could call him and find out more info.

Stock head head gasket will not hold

is the stock head gasket copper or fiber? what about fire ringing the head?

The 301 engine and it's bigger brothers, the 358 and the 402, are rather popular in hot farm pulling over here.

Most run the 358 (the block is a bit thicker casting) with an HX 50 and 13 to 14mm pump, air to air intercooler and 2700 rpm. The same set up works extremely well with the 402 - and you can do more.
There is 402s in Europe that make app. 1000 hp at 2700 rpms.

I would think a Holset HX 40 should still work with the 301 at 3000 rpm - if you are allowed to put an intercooler on, do it!
The 301 block has the advantage that you can get a P-Pump on without having to grind much of the block away and it will swing the 358 crank - which cures it's biggest disatvantage some: lack of low end tourque.

You need to fire ring the head and put a copper gasket in.

Heads are not bad, crank balance is also not as far of as it is on other engines and the valve train can take a massive number of rpms with very little changes.

Basically, if you want to be mean: Take the 402 with the stroker crank and put it in the tractor the 301 belongs in.

Here's some 358s and 402s running with a 2.6 inch turbo inlet limit at 2700 rpms (and being misused by track officals as track preperators):

Sascha,

I think you have the IH 301 engine confused with the D310. The 301 is the old indirect injection engine (like a D282) and the 310 is what here in the states is referred to as a "German diesel" The D310 is a shorter stroked version of the D358.

ouch
The US built IH engines are not very common here and I keep getting confused because the 310 is the "5.1" here.
Oh well... if you don't say anything you don't say anything wrong...

A big problem with the 301 motors are they only have 4 mains.

will a turbo from a 5.9 cummins work at 3000 rpm

YOU MUST o-ring the head, use a copper head gasket and use ARP studs. Any shortcuts will resrlt in failure.

These heads have kind of a different exhaust porting layout I am just curious to how well these heads flow.
