Streetable DT466 mods? August 22, 2010 10:14AM
I'm starting a repower project with my '86 F250. I have a '93 DT466C that will be shoehorned in the truck. I'm wanting 800-900 streetable horsepower. I don't want to break the bank doing it, but I know power isn't free. What size P-pump is likely needed....800-900cc? Injector line size? Injectors? Who would you recommed to build the pump/injectors? Intercooler or not needed?

Looking for twin turbo set that will keep the smoke resonable. I have no clue what turbos to use or who to get them from. Also, what modifications would be needed to the DT466 to meet that power goal with good reliability?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to the DT466 and trying to learn all I can before I start look for and purchasing parts.

Thanks again,

Heath

I really dont think you will find a way to make 800+ hp and have it run reliably on the street too. It will be track only. With a good p pump and twins you would probably be around 1400hp instead anyways. Good luck.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? August 22, 2010 03:39PM
I keep hearing 800 horse numbers from SF guys, so he could make that with a GT42 (bullet proof as heck), and a GOOD pump, big lines, etc.
Run a intercooler! One off a semi (air to air) would be easy and low maint.
No muffler and an 8" stack, KILLER !!!!!

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? August 22, 2010 04:08PM
I have always wanted to do this. And i know 5.9 cummins can have 800 horse on a street truck. maybe not the best streetability. Twins definately would help. And if the cummins can do it the bigger cubed 466 can do it no problem. all in the set up.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? August 23, 2010 02:21AM
Who would build a good P-pump??? Columbus, Scheid? Anyone else?

Any idea on the twin setup?

Heath

You would be better off going on the cummins forum and asking about 8-900hp street trucks, the setup would be very similar ask what pump and twin setup they have. Most you will find are still on a single under 1000hp but they will be very helpful and have hundreds of trucks in that power range, also can give u hints on the rest of the driveline so it can better handle that power Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there is a big difference in the 5.9L Cummins and the 7.6L IH. The fuel, CFM output/input, cam, and of course set up for a 5.9 will certainly be different than that of a 7.6.

I have a S480 turbo for the small bottom charger, any ideas for the larger top charger?

Thanks again,

Heath

Call Dan @ Columbus

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? April 05, 2011 02:43PM
i would think the torque would mutilate a driveline in a pick-up without major mods.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? April 05, 2011 04:07PM
your biggest problem wont be the HP it will be the weight of the motor in a pickup on the street. It could be terrible to drive with so much weight over the front. it would prolly need to be sitting in the cab with you to balance out for street use.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? April 06, 2011 09:06AM
Columbus has been less that helpful on the phone. I've gotten basically no help from Dan or Mark on the subject. Very frustrating to say the least. The drivetrain will not be stock (10 lug Dana 80's, Fuller trans, SCS T-case), and the DT is roughly 300lbs heavier than the current diesel under the hood now. Yeah, it's heavier, but 300 lbs is certainly not a deal breaker by any streach.

Anyway, any other suggestions? There is a lot of knowledge here and thanks for the help. What about the T18A95 turbo?

Most shops shy away politely from projects like yours.
To many go wrong. Hope yours goes well.

That's exactly what you'll find nearly everywhere you turn. My theory on turbo selection is to go with what works on a Dodge, but have 2cm larger exhaust housing on the small turbo. You'll still need a fairly tight housing to spin it in such a light rig. When I was planning the 466 swap, I was going to use an HX40/16-18 with an HT3B/26. But an S480 seems to me like it would pair nicely with an S300 with a 60-62mm compressor and the larger available exh side. You're one of very few to even get this far with the 466-in-a-pickup swap, keep it up sirrr!

The S480 is the small charger in the set up. I'm just not sure what larger charger would be a good option on top of it. A puller I got the P-pump and the S480 from suggested a Air Research T18A95, but he wasn't sure either. I have three exhaust housings for the S480, a 132, a 125, and a 110. The 132 is on there now. Even with that 132 housing, I may need to wastegate it into the top charger to prevent over spinning it. Progress is slow, but I am still making progress at least LOL. It seems finding information on the DT466 and a good set up is harder than I had hoped.

Building something similair to heath's. But in a crew cab IH pickup. Looking at 500rwhp. So far I have a highly modded bosch MW pushing 175/1000cc with a 3800 gov spring. wondering what my best setup would be. Was thinking one VGT...or twins. Found a deal on a garrett 72mm off a detroit. Probably too big for just a single right?

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? March 12, 2013 02:45PM
You have it wrong. The 480 is way to big for a street charger on the manifold even in twins. A s480 is easily 1300hp capable so use it for your top charger and put a s300 on the manifold. I would go with a 64/71 myself and wastegate it into the big charger. You would have to be running 3000rpm to get your chargers lit with a 480 on the manifold. Biggest problem will be pump. To make 1000hp you will need a good 13mm pump and they all by design have touchy governors especially once the gov weights have been machined and springs changed to get them to turn rpms. I am guessing you will want the capability to run 4000rpm or so for a nice street truck.Mechanical governed trucks over 600rwhp all suck to drive, not that they can't be driven, but honestly they suck. With a common rail you can drive up to a 800rwhp truck decent becuase the electronics allow so much better control and the ability to turn off and regulate fueling and throttle response parameters. Most any truck street driven over that are running NOS to get them over 1000rwhp. Having been around these high performance trucks since the mid 90's I can say I have never seen or driven any 1000rwhp fuel and air only trucks that I thought yeah I would want that as my daily driver. I have perosnaly known a half dozen guys that built trucks for that power range to do exactly what you want. None of them drove them more than a year or two and they went back to something more driveable.

62/71/13^S480 setup is good for 850-900hp but that's in my 5.9 Common rail

This has got to be some of the worst and most miss guided info I've ever read. With this info he is doomed to fail for sure.

Instead of a blanket complaint, maybe you could offer where these "worst" mistakes could be corrected.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? February 11, 2014 02:28AM
So far evey comment about twins is backwards. Big charger is the bottom little charger is the top on the manifold. Looking at what the 5.9 Cummins guys do will help you in no way possible. 359CI compared to 466CI. You need completely different chargers for the same HP as what a Cummins would need.

Can anyone tell me what CC you can get out of a 10mm MW injection pump with stock dt466 truck injectors by turning up the fuel rate and governor? Lets say 3200 rpm tops.

Only piece I can add is with 19mm of rack travel, it pushes 137-140cc. With 21mm of travel, it gets 180-183cc. This is on a typical 10mm MW.

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? January 03, 2015 08:33AM
Thanks dale. I assume 21mm is full rack with the jamnuts backed all the way to the end of the rack travel limiter. MW's dont have a rack plug interference issue do they?

So 180cc cleaned up by a good charger, that should translate to what, 320hp give or take?

Re: Streetable DT466 mods? January 03, 2015 02:40PM
Yes, that is the rough spot to get as close to 21mm as it'll get. They have their own issues. My pump guy says the lifters can rotate in the bore after losing the keeper(tie bar), but didnt tell me what causes it. Yes, that would be about right on hp.

Here's a start. Then again, it is a blog on the internet. Supposedly 10K can get you 1000 HP.

That 10k thing was actually what Hypermax said to one of my buddies. The fine print was that you do most of the work yourself, and save $ on a good used pump. I should take that quote out of the page, I see now it isn't gonna happen for $10k.
