Looking to put a 414 in an IH 666. Where/what can i use for a backing plate?

I have always been told the factory diesel backing plate will work, but if you have a gasser, you will need to find that. It seems to me someone is re-making them, possibly Leaman's, but not sure.

A stock backing plate will fit. Even the front cover from a truck without a water pump from a 300 will fit on a 400.

The stock back plate will work off d312 but don't waste your time on stock flywheel or TA. They would work in a non turbo application but with turbo, carry a five gallon bucket to the pulls because your going to need it to pick up all the parts that blow out of the ta housing. Custom shafts and triple disc will save you a lot of aggravation. You can get a triple disc for around $3100 sfi approved and input shaft with fast constant mesh gears sets for around $1600-1800. I have been down this road before and after I saved myself a lot of money by modifying stock parts that never put the power to the wheels.

Help with IH 666 project September 09, 2010 04:42AM
Would like to put a DT 466 in a IH 656 or 666. Which rearend is best to use or are they the same ? Will either of these rearends even withstand this much HP ? What needs to be changed as far as gears and rearend to with stand 700 - 900 HP ? Planning on removing the TA . Thanks for any help.

The 656 has a faster ring and pinion14/49 666 has a 13/49
also the 656 carrier is just a lil better than the 666 but you need to make botom shaft in tranny solid and make billet bearing retainers there are alot of little things that need to be done but it can be done just takes time and money

I know of two different tractors that are using a 656 and a 666 both are using the stock direct gear. They both have stock ring and pinion gears,bull gears. One tractor has a 466 and the other has a 360 both have more power than you are looking for and are holding up fine. You can us either ring setup 13,14,or 16. The 16 came in 656 utility and all will fit without any mods.

Good luck with that! Yes, ring and pinion and bull gears will hold up, but tranny will NOT!

The only stock gear we use is the 4th 5th combo for direct. I don't know of very many people that use the stock gears unless they like to see how much hps it takes to their them up.

If you want to run DT466 motor get yourself a IH 1066 or 1466 would be way to go.
