JD 4430 slips coming out of the hole October 05, 2010 08:58AM
JD 4430 w/ 40 series 466, stock A-pump turned all the way up, 4 disc clutch wet clutch (from a JD8440), pressure is about 190psi, quad tranny.
Pulling in D3 in 8500lbs. class, tractor seems to slip coming out of the hole.
After clutch is released tractor will slowly start moving then after about 2 seconds it seems to lock up.
Any ideas?
Could it be the 2 speed slipping, or possibly the clutch?
This clutch setup should be good for much more HP then the stock engine is putting out.

Thanks in advance...

Did you ever figure out your slipping issue? I have a 4230 with similar engine that slips with stock clutch. I was looking at the 8440 clutch but I'm not sure it would work in my tractor.

Yes it could easily be the 2spd slipping as they need beefed up as much as the engine clutch does.

change the hyd filters, run at 200psi.

It sounds like your two clutches are not engaging at the same time. Possibly whatever method you chose to port oil to the PTO clutch is taking a few seconds longer to react than the traction clutch piston or vise versa. So one clutch is engaging and a second or two later the second clutch is engaging.

I would say it sounds like a control problem because from what I've seen a wet clutch or quad will not grab once it starts to slip.

I took my tractor apart and no sign of anything slipping, but something definetly slips towards the end of the track. I have a complete 8440 clutch setup can i put this in a 4230? also i want to install the 4450 quad clutch pack can these two mods be done with out machine work?
