IH C-301 Pistons October 23, 2010 01:16PM
Can anyone tell me if there are any pistons that are 4" that will fit in a c-301 and still use the stock stroke and rods? Also; What is the compression heighth on the 301 piston? Thank you

no, not that would have any compression with a tilt valve head. might find one that would work with a straight valve head.

Don't go to a 4" bore makes a lot of extra work and problems. I sell a set of pistons that are flat top to fit the C 301. This allows you to use a factory head gasket.
If you want to go to 4" you can offset grind the crank 3/8 " down to 2" journal use a set of cockshutt buda rods out of 40 or 50 tractor.
You can also use allis chalmers 262 combine engine rods with 1969 4 barrel only Ford Windsor or Cleavland engine pistons. I cant remember which one is 4" bore. They will line up pretty close to deck height. The problem is the cylinder walls are very thin with 4" and you may have to sleeve the block. Stay with the smaller bore and it will last a lot longer with less problems.

We have been running one for 8 years now never had any trouble. 4" bore 351 ford windsor on stock rods we stroked the crank .225 to bring the pistons to the top. Straight valve head with stock head gasket and run 6000 rpms. Hold on because it goes! Use a 301 combine block.

How many head gaskets have you replaced? The fire ring hangs a little over the cylinder at 4". Bring that tractor to the Mid Atlantic Super Pull. I would like to see how it runs, sound like a tough combination.

We never have blown one out with this setup. We Use a fel-pro head gasket and studs in the head. Has 275 psi of compression.
