501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 05:28AM
hey was wondering what all it took to get a rd 501 engine into a 460 and if the rearend will handle that kinda power and what had to be done to the flywheel and clutch to get things to mate up?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 05:51AM
Get ready to fork over the money.... I looked into this, and the clutch, flywheel, adapter plates, etc were gonna run north of $4000. I was hoping to find stuff to do this reasonable for a 3000 rpm cheater class, but everything available that will hold that kind of power in a small package like a 460 is SFI rated, and priced accordingly. Floyd Isbell is the guy to talk to, and he should be around shortly. If you are looking to do it low buck, 3000 rpm, a 560 is a better tractor to start with.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 08:53AM
Ok understand i first plaining on using a 560 but i notice the 460 is like 500 lbs lighter is there any way to lighten up a 560 ?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 09:02AM
The way to lighten up a 560 is to not buy a 560 and build a truck.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 11:27AM
what clas are you goona pull weight wise. I am currentley doing this witha a dt motor an boy it adds up pretty quick I wouldn't waste my time on a 460 build a 560 you can put a bigger clucth in it if you wanna stay farily cheap I think out of a 986 will work its all in what you want an how much you wanna spend I have close to $7000 in mine an its not all togehter yet

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 11:45AM
What is costing so much and what other problems will i have with this build?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 12:06PM
well the cost of the motor was 2000 the clutch was 3100 straight shaft and gears was 1500 i spent a little more money on the clutch an I built a custom frt end and I needled the rear was the rest, an i had the tractor I am doing it right because when you put these big motors in my case a dt 466 I wanna do it once an i don't want to spend every other weekend sitting out working on it.Other problems you might have depending on how crazy you get hp wise is a ta an rearend problems floyd isabell is good with this stuff he has a web site custom tractor parts.com i suggest you talk with him

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 28, 2010 01:09PM
The reason it cost so much is the parts are custom built. The reason for it is the 12" single disc clutch will go to slipping right away at high rpms and in time on low rpms. The TA needs to be eliminated because in direct drive it only has a 7" clutch and planetary drive gears that will strip the teeth off in a flash when you get hooked up on a power track. With the fast set of constant mesh gears you can use second and third gear which are wider and stronger. Whatever tractor you use will require a different length input shaft. These engines make a lot of power and It is only a matter of time before you have problems when you save money build this combination.
I have backing plates ready to ship with front engine mounts for 460 or 560 $250 for the back plate and $50 for front engine mounts.

do you sell a Ta eliminator and how much, and what would it cost for shafts and clutch?

WORKING ON A PROJECT JUST LIKE THAT RIGHT NOW BUT A RD 450 IN A 560 REALLY ENJOY READING POSTS BY FLOYD ASBELL HE REALLY HAS THIS RED DIAMOND THING DOWN IN THE 60 SERIES

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 07:05AM
Ok now we have a 460 around here thats running a rd 450 with no ta, how weak are the rear ends can you put Farmall M parts in them? If I could I would like to stay with the 460 cause I have located one I have a Bridgeport mill

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 07:35AM
The M parts will not go into a 460 transmission. My question would be do you have to run a naturally aspirated engine in the class you are looking to run?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 08:26AM
yes we do but other than that anything goes i am pulling against MMs with 800 cube water pump motors

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 11:46AM
Well, I guess you can go ahead and spend all that money; afterall; It's yours

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 12:42PM
The input shaft, bearings, coupler, final input shaft, fast constant mesh gear set, and cage. are $1600.00
Double disc clutch with three finger Hayes pressure plate, two disc, floater plate, steel flywheel, and ring gear $2400.00 sfi approved.

On your M you can use the rear, but it takes a totally different input shaft to get rid of the bolt together coupler in front of the transmission. You would need to use different sheet metal though, most rules say
engine cylinders must match original tractor. Such as m had 4 cylinders.

I would like to know how to build this tractor set up for less money ,I'm all about saving money but I also don't like buying the same part twice. Floyd Isbell 570 637-1311

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 02:18PM
Keep in mind if there's no cube limit in your class those MM engines started at 800 cubes. I highly doubt they're still 800.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 29, 2010 03:58PM
Go ahead spend spend spend a 560 with a good 12" clutch and pressure plate with HEAVY springs can handle over 300HP and there are more gear vendors out there some higher some lower look in the builders list on this site for other gear builders after all like L.T. said ITS YOUR MONEY.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 01:29AM
There is a farmall M out here that runs an RD 501 between 600 and 640 cid. it has a rev limiter set at 6200 rpms and it hits it.One piece tilt hood, aluminum wheels all the way around, disc brakes, roll cage and flawless paint job. Pulling against mm and case tractors, the case has a an engine way beyond a thousand cid that run super well, but about 98% of the time the M wins. It is the best running rd501 I have ever seen pull. They run a triple disc slipper and if anyone wants to run with this tractor it's going to take some good parts. There are a lot of builder out there that build a lot of nice parts but do they have what you need?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 02:33AM
I just getting info about this build before I just jump into it and I thank you all for your input.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 03:16AM
Do you build gears?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 03:17AM
What is this Red Diamond engine anyway?, Never heard of it. What was it used in?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 05:12AM
ih had three different diamond series that i know of,black, silver, and red.the reds came in 501,450,and i think in the mid 300 range.the smaller is used in old w 40 tractors,i think, and another is used in pickups and thge tractor motors.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 01:59PM
what gears are you looking for?

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 October 30, 2010 02:54PM
Stock style gears that are made out of material that is heavier than stock material. I'll be calling you tomorrow. Look at your facebook.

Re: 501 Red Diamond Engine in farmall 460 March 16, 2011 04:38PM
I put an RD501 in a 460 (300 rearend) a few years back. I made an aluminum flywheel and used a 2 disk pedal clutch. Since the 460 bellhousing is alot smaller than a 560, it would be very hard to get a single disk clutch to hold with some serious power. Used a Crower Wear Plate. I made custom frame rails and bolted them to the outside of the bellhousing intead of having to notch the flange on the rear of the engine for the stock rails. I used a 460 rear plate and redrilled it to fit the rear of the 501. There are a few bolt holes that overlap. The best thing to do is drill those straight tru and use a long bolts to hold everything together. I'm an oliver guy at heart, so I had my tractor setup where I could remove the engine without having to split it. I also notched the rear of the block and mounted a high torque starter from the front ( about the same way they put a Powerstroke starter on a 400 series IH). Front motormounts aren't any problem. I did cut 10.5" out of the TA housing to move the engine backward to compensate for that heavy engine in a light class. The engine was 740 cid and the tractor weighted around 3600lb bare. Between everyone bitching about the 3 shifters, shortened bellhousing, and a few other things, I got fed up and sold it. It went East. I'd like to see some pics of it after they painted it because I spent way too much time on that one!!
