Chrome Moly roll cage question December 03, 2010 02:54PM
What does a 3 bar chrome moly cage weigh? VS a steel cage? Weight is an issue, so I'm trying to look at my options. Also who can build a a chrome molly cage? Who can build a steel cage? What do they cost?

well the density of 4130 chromoly is 0.283 lb/in^3 and the density for 1010 steel is 0.284 lb/in^3. This will result in only a 0.35% weight savings if the volume of the two cages are the same. However it would be possible to reduce the wall thickness of the chromoly and yield the same strength as a thicker walled steel cage. If you were to use 2" OD and .095 wall, at 3 sticks (60ft), chromoly would weigh roughly 524lbs and a steels cage would weigh roughly 526lbs

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 12:47AM
Wall thickness is the point. U have to figure 095 vs 12

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 01:07AM
I never realized I might be that strong as I seem to have no problem picking up a dom 3 bar cage and walking around my shop! dom cage could be any where between say 220# to the high 200's depending on cage size and shape, of course 4130 will be less as you are using .095 instead of .120 and the weight of the base would be on top of above said estimate you will use about 60+ feet of 2.00,16 feet of 1.875,6 feet of 1.750 plus the flat plate used in the lower structure

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 01:55AM
How thick of metal are most bases made out of 1/4" plate? Which could be lighten with cutting holes out?

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 03:54AM
The 3 bar mild steel cages that I make without a base weigh about 150 lbs, sfi approved.

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 08:41AM
when you get your cage inspected isn't all painted and ready to go, how do they know if its 4130 or mild, do they x ray them for wall/material thickness. I don't think you should skimp on safety; just saying

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 05, 2010 02:25AM
It's not x-ray. The NTPA uses ultrasound to determine the wall thickness of the tubing. It's done everytime the cage is renewed.

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 05, 2010 01:51PM
so if its ultra sound how would they know if its moly or mild, do they check carbon?

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 06, 2010 02:41PM
have to leave a spot on one of the main loops unpainted and they do a chemical/eletrical test on it, all is good as long as the cloth turns the right color.

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 09:31AM
curious. what did it cost you to get your SFI authority as a manufacturer? you can PM me if you wish.

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question December 04, 2010 09:38AM
Richwine does have a x-ray to check the thickness and he does befroe your cage is certified. I don't you have to be an SFI certified manufacturer to build a cage, you just have to build it to SFI specs and NTPA does the final inspection.

How thick are the bases that most guys use for there cages?? Solid piece or do you burn holes out to reduce weight? Thanks

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question- Base question December 05, 2010 11:43AM
that would be a tough question to answer, if your cage is narrow enough on the bottom to keep it close to your rear end housing, then .250 would be fine provided you were to have bends in strategic locations plus use the benefit of gussets to provide stiffness and strength. remember you should have 5 points of attachment on both sides minimum, remember it's your butt you are protecting! look at others for some good ideas!

Re: Chrome Moly roll cage question- Base question December 05, 2010 12:35PM
A moly cage is approx 30 lbs lighter than a DOM cage.

The base can be made light but needs to meet certain criteria and minimums.

I can build what you want for a cage and give you tips on how to mount it lightly if you wish to do that yourself or I can sell it "bolt on".

Does the base that you build look similar to this one?

That cage ain't no good, doesn't have Mafia OEM beer can holder Smiling

No, mine is made from tubing. Lots lighter and still strong.
