Is This Oliver 1950 Puller Turning 6000 RPM's? December 09, 2010 06:10AM

I personally think its somewhere in the 3000-4000 rpm range and wheres the safety equipment? Just what would it take to turn a 4-53 Detroit 6000 rpms?

Alcohol!!!!! The Rods and valvetrain wont take it anyway, 5000 max has been my experience.

That tractor is nowhere near 4000 RPMs. Detroits sound like high revs, even at a idle.

Very deceiving sound, especially since a 2 stroke has double the power/combustion phases in the same number of crankshaft rotations as a 4 stroke. Fun to listen to, would need to keep ear plugs handy farming with one.

This tractor is turning at least 4,000 RPMs if not a little more. We have 3 1950s that we pull one of them is turbocharged and we crank them up to 3,100 RPMs and they arent reved up nothing close to like this one is.

I'd think this one [www.youtube.com] is a lot closer to 6000 RPM than the other.

Yes I agree 1655. The first video is more around the 4,000 RPM range.

Best sounding motor on track with no bottom end.

its runnin awful fast for the plowing gear its in!! and a little crazy for the lack of safety eq with a little kid that close!!

Perfectly safe. Detroits are 2 strokes, not 4. 2200 rpm sounds like 4400 and it's amplified because that particular engine is not turbocharged, but it does have and requires a supercharger to fill the cumbustion chamber since there is no down-stroke to pull in air.

I would say that 1950 is running 2800-3000 engine rpm. Jimmy's sound twice as fast as a 4 cycle, and they all sound the same whether 2,3,4,6, or even 8 cylinders, though the bigger ones, 8, 12, etc sound even louder! guess thats why they're called screaming jimmys! No bottom end, may be true, but remember that 4-53 is only 212 CID! Ed.

One saying about running those Jimmy's, (if it was in a truck) was to slam your hand in the door before you start it up for the day to get in the right mood to drive. Nice and mad so you'll have you're foot buried in it all day.

My uncle is a truck driver and he said those jimmys are like some of his girl friends. They make a lot of noise in town but you get them out in the country and they just don't put out.

The guy that posted the video is adamant that this tractor turns 6000 rpms because the owner said it did. Those of us that have been around Detroits and that have pulled them know that its probably pretty close to 3000 rpms.

Maybe the owner has a tach that counts injection pulses so he really thinks it is turning 6000rpm. Spinning

We always said a 318 equated to 3 hp and 18 wheelsGrinning
