11 Pics-Brush Pull Rich Hill,MO August 1969 With Walk On Sled December 30, 2010 01:10PM

Paul Godfrey from South Greenfield,MO winning the 12,000 class. In 1968 he bought this 856 brand new and dropped it off at King Brothers IH in Arcola,Illinois to get the pulling parts put on.Paul came to MO from South Charleston,Ohio and was a neighbor to Danny Dean. This tractor was hauled to Ohio every year to plant 400 acres of crops.

The 856 only pulled the 12000 but the AC people issued a challenge for it to pull the 15000 class. They let Paul add a few borrowed weights and he used people as weight too but was short of 15000.He made 3 full pulls to win the class. On the 1st run a 15,000 tractor was on the sled plus all 50 sled riders. On the second run they added 15(I was one) men at the line and it still took it out.On the 3rd pass they put a road grader on the sled and it took it out with all 50 riders. In 6 years of walk on sleds I had never seen this kind of weight pulled. The sled bottom was very hot from the friction.

Jim Keith from Richards,MO made a valiant try on his 15,000 lb D-21 AC but couldnt quite get it out the end on the 3rd try.

A smiling Paul Godfrey holding his (2) 1st place trophies.I bought this tractor in 1974 and pulled it until 1985.I recently had the turbo I used given back to me by a tractor pulling friend from Kansas.

My local Allis dealer Larry Balk pulling his 190XT in the 12000 class.Larry said that tractor pulling hepled him sell 100 new 190 XT's.

Larry in the 12,000 pulloff with a 15,000 tractor and extra riders on the sled.Notice the LP bottle.

Bill Keith from Richards,MO pulling the 12,000 class.

Alva Snyder from Mapleton,KS pulling his 706 in the 12000 class. He cranked lots of rpms out of the D-310.Harris Pyeattes Super 90 Massey puller is the pace tractor.

Roy Gene Claypool from Richards,MO pulling his 1964 model 806 in the 15,000 class. He bought this tractor new when he was 22 and still owns it 46 years later. In 1970 it got a turbo and some 20.8's.I used to pull our Oliver 1950 against it.

The late Harris Pyeatte from Butler,MO on his 1100 Massey in the 9000 class. He also pulled a Super 90 in the 7000 class. In 1971 this 1100 got big tires, turbo, and pump and won the 9000 class at the MO State Fair.

In 45 years of pulling this was the most perfect track that I've seen.Over 100 tractors went down it and never fazed it.The sheeps foots marks were there at the start of the pull and at the end of the pull.Record amounts of weight was pulled. If you are ever in the Rich Hill,MO area the track was 1 mile south of town on the west side of hwy 71.41 years later I still think about this pull every time I go by there.

I'm sure that most of you dont remember the walk on sleds. They were last used in my area in 1970. If I wasnt pulling I was usually riding the sled.A 6 mph pace tractor was used but they were still dangerous. The tractors started getting so much power they would lay back some and then hit 8-9 mph which made it fun getting on the sled.

Matt, how did the 1206 do this year? I figured that I'd better share all these pictures with everyone because they will all be thrown away when I'm gone. This afternoon I found 3 packages that had been long lost for 20 years in a damp shed. They barely escaped being totally ruined. There seems to be a shortage of old pictures as so few are posted on here.I remember other people taking pictures at the pulls 30-40 years ago.

For its first year, Blaine, I was pleased. We ran it in the 9700lb & 10700lb classes. For the year, we tied for 2nd in points in the 10700lb class, and placed 4th in points in the 9700lb class. The only breakage we really had was breaking one of the release fork pivot pins in the pressure plate, making the clutch drag. We were lucky enough that we could slip in a new pin in the pressure plate thru the bottom inspection cover, and were back up & running the next pull. That, and a starter that decided it was gonna go bad at the worst possible time. Other than that, it held together! A few checks & adjustments for next year, and we'll be back at it again! Was hoping to paint it this winter, but I'm not really holding my breath on that happening.

They would put LP to the engine with no regulator. As the tractor would pull down they would crack open the LP valve and just keep on opening it up until the end of the pull and sometimes they would not get it shut off on time at the end and all heck would break loose.

Lots of us ran LP in the late 1960's.In fact several tractors had blue bottles as it wasnt illegal back then. One 5020 JD even ran oxygen and put the pistons out the exhaust.

what length were the tracks for the stepon sleds

Re: 11 Pics-Brush Pull Rich Hill,MO August 1969 With Walk On Sled December 30, 2010 02:02PM
It seemed like most tracks were 250 ft long ,but occasionally some were up to 300 ft..There used to be a 60 second time limit and some of the fairly stock tractors never made it much past 200 ft.

A person got on every 10 ft on both sides of the track. It was almost impossible to keep the chairs filled. Some would leave right in the middle of a class. We often had over 100 tractors with lots of pulloffs so it could be 1-2 am in the morning.I flagged a few pulls in the old days.I once got home at 5 am and the pull was only 30 miles away.

Thank you for giving us a little back in time of tractor pulling. I used to pull a little bit in western Ia. I remember a pull in Odebolt Ia. when I could hardly get the sled started as there was a new 1206 on the sled and people would step on the sled every 10 ft. After I finally made my pull a 4020 from Mapleton Ia. hooked to the sled. If I remember I think his name was Leo Uhl. He had a difficult time as well starting the sled and as a result he brought his 4020 over backwards on top of the 1206. He was very lucky to walk away from that .
I remember going to a M&W pull in Humbolt Ia. in the early 70's. I was very impressed watching Any Main campaign a couple of Cases. A 1370 I think and am not sure of the other one. Do you happen to have pics of his.
Again thank you BG-IH

I saw Andy Main run in Richmond, KY in a NTPA pull in around 1973. He had a 1070 and a 1370 at that time. His machines were nothin pretty but thay ran very strong.

The first time I ever pulled was Archie,MO in 1967.I went a whopping 30'6" on a 670 MM.I saw a 44-6 Massey tip over at Kansas City in the early 70's and it wasnt good. The guy lived but was badly hurt.

Sorry, but no Andy Main pictures.I only saw him pull twice and never got a picture.I might be able to find some in an old Puller.

Massey 101 called Giddy Up Go wasn't it? Took forever to get an ambulance in the old American Royal building. He was still in a full body cast at the MO State Fair pull.
