Building Mod Farm Tractor (massey) February 01, 2011 06:23AM
Im building a mod farm tractor and for those who arent familiar, its 400 cu.in limit, 6000, 7000, pound classes. I want to build an older massey, 1100, 1080. can you get an 1100 down to that weight? thats my biggest question. will i be able to take a big tractor like that and bring it down to 6000?. I am also looking at a 1080 but would have to swap the 354 into it. can i get a 1080 down to that weight?

yes use to pull a v8 in 5000 1080 would be same as a 399 with 354

i dont think you could get an 1100 down that far.. there really heavy tractors i think they weigh close to 13000 lb stock id say 8000 is about as low as you could get one

I have an 1100 in my neighborhood that weighs 6500 with 510 perkins. ALOT of work! Not much left of the tractor.

You can get an 1155 down to around 6500lb with the 540 still in it. It takes some work and you can still make it look like a tractor and not all chopped up. Depends on how good of a craftsman you are though. The v8 is considerably heavier than the 6cyl so it can be done

Check out the Prewitt Pulling Team. They have a 1130 in the 6000 lb class.

i will be definately taking the whole front end of from the front of the motor and building a tube frame around it to save weight. i think that will help me loose alot of weight.

More important than what the stock unit weighs is what the stuff you don't need weighs. An 1135 with cab & 20.8's weighs 12,200 bare. But since Massey
used no frame rails, the oil pan is very heavy, as is the entire casting supporting
the hydraulic pump & front end. Then yank off one of those 3pt. lift cylinders & weigh it. When all that stuff & the rock shaft cover is gone, you should be getting in the neighborhood. 1080 rear end not nearly as stout as 1100. Just don't get so carried away machining parts that you end up with an unsafe unit. Good luck with trying something different!

another choice is a 275 or 285 massey, any good points about these? its a lighter tractor to start with but i would have to drop in the 354

If im not mistaken prewitts tractor is an oliver rearend but i could be wrong. Marks 1155 ran the 5000 pound class for years, wasnt much left to it but still looked excatly like a 1155 and was a tuff runner so im thinking a 1100 would be no problem at all
