Stroke vs better flowing cylinder head? February 02, 2011 01:13PM
I am building a John Deere 3x4 turbo 466 cubic inch open RPM engine and wanting to know opinions on which to build, one with stock 4 9/16 bore 8.1 head or to build a long stroke 50 series head. I know it takes more money to get the same flow(in the 250 cfm wet, 280 dry) out of 50 series head as an 8.1.
The longer stroke should give you more torque but I hate to give up the better flowing 8.1 head.

Let me hear your opinion.

With open rpms torque is not as much a factor since you are turning more rpms

I would stay with the 55 series head 0r 8.1 head long stroke don't always mean more torque. With 3x4 turbo good head flow will be very inportant. But it all comes back to finding the right combination and spending time on the dyno. I wish you the best of luck them DT 466's are tuff to run with.

Use the 55 or 8.1L head.. use the longer stroke, and smaller bore.. they will have to notch the sleeves for the valves.. REI has the parts..

If I was to put a long stroke engine together I would use 8.1 crank witch is 5.060 then put a 4.430 bore then you dont need to notch sleeves for the 55 series head. Just my two cents

With a 5.060 stroke and a 4.430 bore that is 467 cubes most organizations have a +or - 1% If you go with 4.425 bore it would be 466 cubes

Yea.. sorry.. I missed a digit on the calculator..
the sleeves I've seen to do that with the 8.1L crank and 8.1L head were notched.. maybe they didn't have to be.. but might have been done to help unshoud the valves... Like I said.. RIE has the parts to bring it from 496 to 466... and use the 8.1L parts..
