Yes, 4" pipe fed by a20hp pump motor gives a lot of waterEye Rolling. Next step will be to move the operator BEHIND the wall and to install a couple of windows...

Dont know if this was posted in the past but here is a major Dyno Room blowup.
I show this to my students in class before they fire up their engines and Run them on the Dyno for the Grade.

Pulling from the rear axle, I sure hope that is a good quality ratchet strap holding the front end down. That could get really interesting if it would fail. At one point the front wheels are jumping up and down like Herbie the Love Bug. Lets be carefull out there.

Yes, there is a heavy duty ratchet in the front end, plus two supports from the upper part of rear axle housing to the dyno...

This is a limited RPM super farm tractor, (european) so one could do apretty lon run without problems. It was only loaded to about 50% for less than 10 seconds... before the waterline broke...

It is from both axles. The dyno was originally used to test ship engines and powerplant engines. It is rated to 60 000Nm.

Is there many dyno's in the U.S. that use this set up driven off rear axles and if so where at? Most dyno's I have seen use a dummy rear end and a shaft that measures hp off the crank this looks much easier than splitting a tractor all the time to tune em.

So the dyno held but the tractor broke. Oops. It sounded like the turbo went bad into surge and then it looked like maybe the shaft broke as I saw sparks and the smoke tube jump when it quit.

No, nothing broke, just unburnt fuel that fired in smoke pipe when he backed off...

That is good broken parts are never fun. I would suggest backing the load down on the dyno before pulling the throttle back on the tractor in the future. That is how we dyno with our water brake and it is very smooth. I also would suggest modyfing the water valve so it opened and closed quicker so you could perform a full load pull in less time and be able to apply or take away load more quickly.

Yes, water valve servo is on the "do soon list". This is all new to us, so we learn something from every "pass"... Appreciate your input! What kind of dyno and software do you use?

looks like you are using land and sea software on the pc screen shot?? or depac perhaps. on that dyno pass it looks like it took along time to get the tractor under load when it smoothed out finally. we try to keep rpm steady and get load to it quick and then pull a 300 rpm per second on diesel turbo alky and blown 500-600 rpm. on large turbo diesel its hard because they wont make any power untill water kicks it in the a$$ and then the dyno has to correct quickly. most of our passes are between 5 to 10 seconds to get it lit and then 4 to 5 second pull.

We have an M&W Hydraulic and a Big taylor water brake. It is a basic deal with just a mechanical pressure gauge to read torque generated, and then a tachometer on the shaft. From RPM and torque you can calculate the horsepower. The M&W can go from 200hp to 700hp load at 1000shaft rpm in one turn of the valve handle. the Taylor has a sliding handle gate valve so you can open or shut flow really fast. I like it better for doing fast dyno pulls. I find that I can leave say a 300hp equivelant load applied at 3000rpm and then idle the tractor witout touching the valve. Then I can bring the tractor up using the throttle and it spools nice since as the rpms increase the pump flows more the valve becomes more restrictive and thus applies more load. This lets me get it lit easy and already start at 300hp load, then I can make the pull and it never take me more than 15seconds to get a peak power reading using this method.

The brake is an old ZĂ–LLNER brake that we got from WARTSILA diesel engine factory. Software and data aquistion is Dynomite from Land&Sea. The brake is rated to 6000hp...

The tractor we run right now is a 3200RPM limited class tractor. We figured this would be a good tractor to start practising with, since it could be run the whole day long wothout hurting the engine...

We need to get things sped up before we put our own PS tractor on the dyno. We might have to put in another type of load valve...
