crush for fire rings

How much crush is needed for fire rings. The head gasket is .060-.065 and the cut in the sleeve is .040, so what is the proper size fire ring that I need? Thanks |

worked on a few

Should be a 105 fire ring you normaly figure the head gasket will crush 10 thousands, if you add that number witch will be 50 now with the cut in the liner you get 90 and you normaly want about 10-15 crush on the fire ring so 105 would work fine and you need to figure that the width of the fire ring will expand when crushed so it will need to be 20 thousands wider than the fire ring so you will need a 125 thousnds width in the liner. |

We also run the same head gasket thickness and the same recess depth and as stated above we also use a 0.105" fire ring which seems to be working well. |

It seems like the gasket didn't crush as much as needed or something. Seems like the .105 blew out. If we put in a slightly larger fire ring, what would be the down fall. If it didn't work we should know right away, water leaking. |

If your using bolts make sure they are not bottoming out in the hole due to Bolt Stretch |

A .015 crush would not hold them in for us. I think a better crush number would be .030 |

If it is a deere you need a u shaped grove cut in the lip of the sleeve. It wont hold if there isn't a outer edge for the ring to press against. |

Depends how much cylinder pressure you plan to run. What type of engine is this? Farm stock diesel wouldn't need as much as a multi-charger super-stock. More info is needed to give an accurate answer. Ed. |

Type of wire will make a difference. Softer wire will have to be thicker than a harder wire. MACK |

Kinda bringing this thread back from the dead, but will a .105 steel fire ring compress that much (.020" or more) or will it hold the head off of the gasket? |

They will crush more than that. The last set I took out measured 0.065". I don't think anyone recommends crushing them that much though, and neither do I..... one of them was busted. |

Maybe you guys can help me also. I have a 426 ac with JD sleeves & pistons with .105 rings in them., But my sleeves on 1,2 &3 are so close to each other they do not have a sides of the groove all the around because they touch at the back of 1 front and back of 2 and front of 3 same with 4,5&6 and we are pushing water out the radiator. What do you think is the problem? Thanks PS its a 531cid |

Sounds like you are leaking compression into the water jacket. Can you do a cooling system pressure test? Might show you which cylinder is leaking by pushing water back into the offending cylinder(s). Though under only 14psi it might not leak as bad as it would under 500? psi from combustion pressure. |

I would get a dial indicator and check liner protrusion of each cylinder (how much above deck) every 60 or 90 degrees around liner.
If possible check where the fire ring seats. If thats ok .. check flatness of cylinder head every 90 degrees at each cylinder. Can you measure the thickness of the fire rings every 60 degrees to see the crush dimension. Did you mark each fire ring and where front is? Your looking for potential places of combustion leakage. Look the head gasket over carefully for clues of leakage paths. |

We checked fire rings.,Not crushed the exact same all the way around,+or- .004 on all of them., Top of fire ring to block surface .070 , gasket is .062.5 liners look like they are good ta counter bore.fire rings started at.105 and crushed about .015. Thanks |

Pull the sleeves and check for cracks in deck and counter bore area. |
