Counterweighted crank ? March 05, 2011 04:37PM
Just wondering if anyone has every counterweighted a crankshaft on a 466ci 3000rpm motor before. If you have i'd like to know if its worth doing or a waste of money. Is this something that's only done on the high rpm ss tractors or are the puller doing it on the 3000rpm classes too. Would like to know if there is any horse power or torque gain from counterweighting or is it mainly just to keep main bearing in the ss tractor. And what about you profarm guys are you turning enough rpms to benefit from a counterweighted crank. Just curious let me know what you think.

The reason this is done, is because of the added forces occurring because of faster acceleration/deceleration of the piston&rod assambly at higher rpm. Not much sense doing it in a low rpm engine.

So there would be no gain horsepower or torque on a 3000rpm engine? What if you were turning 4500 to 5500 rpms. thanks for info.

it just keeps @#$%& inside the block at high rpm --- not making extra power....
Basically the it's done for the same reason as e.g. stronger rod bolts.
