Are The 531 JD Engines Worthless For Pulling May 22, 2011 10:26AM
In reading the 6030 JD thread it seems that absolutely no one pulls a 531 JD.What are the problems with this engine?

Several pullers still use 531, see Middle Tennesse website from links, Green Fever runs in 540 class, and is strong unit. The 531 is just dimensionally the same block as a 619, and 619 are used in multiple ag and construction vehicles, i.e. 690 jd excavator. The heads, especially early 531 and even 619 heads (8630) are not as well flowing as the 8650 heads. Seldom see a 414ih or 436ih pull (sanctioned) anymore for the same reason, classes allow 466, and the ih 466-7-8 motor is available readily out of trucks and school buses for a grand or so a pop. Easier to change an engine than to do a complete tear down to gain 30 to 60 cubic inches. Also, with less than 4000 6030's built, an original engine might not want to be butchered up for a puller!!!

personally feel if you want more cubes its better 2 start with a 531 than a 619. keep the stock bore but add stroke 2 the crank makes a good way to stay in class cube limits and it will build more torque just my 2 pennys

The 531 had a cam driven oil pump just like the early 619s do which of course is not the greatest. Have seen a lot of 531s and 619s with electrolysis on the sleeves which was a common problem generally from running them hot. More SFs are using the 531s because of the smaller bore and then go with more stroke for less choke.Thumbs Up
