Where is the best place to put a pyrometer sensing probe? In the turbo housing or the manifold, just under the turbo?

Re: pyrometer June 08, 2011 06:50AM
I had the same question for a Diesel application. For now, i have put the probe in after the turbo exhaust housing elbow, in the bottom of the exhaust pipe, before my safety crossed bolts. I heard you should put the probe in prior to the turbo in the exhaust header, and that was the proper way to get a accurate reading. But if it overheats the probe, it would melt it through the turbo ruining it. Any professional knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks

In the manifold?

yes

In the manifold under the turbo. If you have a qood quality probe you aren't going to melt it, if you do that will be the least of your problems.

a what temp should you worry?

What kind of pistons are you using? Stock, forged, billet? If stock then stay below 1300 and you should be ok, billets 1800 - 1900.

You'll have more to worry about if the thermocouple probe melts. Type K are the type typically used and they are good well over 2000°F.
