There is a John Deere in VA thats already built, except it has an a-pump. It was built right and looks super sharp. |

Does the 9.0 L have a better flowing head than a 55 series head ? Will a 55 series head fit on a 9.0 L . |

I believe the 55 series head will fit but have not personaly verified. Yes a stock 9.0L head flows great but is modern 4valve per cylinder technology that your class rules might exclude the use of. |

Also remember the 9.0L block has the mounting for an HPCR pump and is running at Crankshaft speed. (small gear on the pump) Also the cam is moved on the 9.0L block.. so it is a little further away from the cylinders. (not much, but a little.. would probably still work.) If you change heads you will have to find a different cam, as the intake and exhaust lobes will have to be moved to different locations, because the valve order is different. (I can't remember if the bearing journals are the same size.)
If you are going all out.. this is trivial stuff.. but if you were going all out, you could care less about the stock parts.. Your other option is to put the 9.0L parts in an 8.1L block. (crank, rods, pistons & liners.) 9.0 (548) block with a 8.1L head gasket on it. timing gears. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/29/2011 02:33AM by JDGnut. |

The 6076, 8.1L and 9.0L all use the same part number cam bearings in the block so they are the same size. The 9.0L has 7 cam bearings vs the old motors just had 4. That makes for much better valve control and stability at high rpms and high spring loads like seen in a limited pro class. These motors are roller from the factory as well. |

I forgot about the extra cam bearings.. It would be interesting to see how much lift the factory rollers could handle.. the retainer part of the lifters could start moving up and down in the block.. but that could easily be modified..
One thing you would have to look at is the holes for the push rods in the head.. you might have to grind the holes out a little..and cut out the head gasket if you used an earlier gasket. If you look at the picture the push rod is at an angle.. the bottom is in the lifter.. the 9.0L gasket is cut out much closer to the edge for the push rod.. I know some of the guys were trying to use this block.. not sure if they got it done.. but I would think that they did.. but I think they were running a billet head.. For the 55 series head.. most of the builders want the R86427 head.. |

A 9 liter deere engine is actually 548 cubic inch. Which would require a destroke or debore. |

Use a 8.1L drop in 4 3/4 sleeves and be at 538 CID. |
