ih cam question

wondering how important degreeing a cam is and what the advantages are. im putting together a 3000 rpm ih engine and have a vogel cam to go in it and wondering if this is worth the trouble, or if i should just line up the timing marks and leave it alone? |

It depends on how well you want it to run. |

you should call chuck and he'll tell you where he wants it. have one in our 3000 rpm tractor dialing it in is well worth it! |

If it came with a cam card it should say what the centerline is on the card. |

What's the advantage either way? (Retarding or as advancing) And is there a window to stay between bc I know eventually valves will start touching pistons? |

If its the 375 Vogel you better have deeper reliefs in the pistons already. If not your in trouble. I believe the ST85 works with stock pistons.
Call Charles. |

Well, heres my OPINION. Get his other cam, I think it's a 375 grind. Cut the piston reliefs deeper .110 total on the intake .160 total on exhaust, set the cam at 97 with an adjustable gear and put it together. If you are building a complete engine, get some truck pistons with the smaller combustion chamber to regain lost comp with the piston cut, or what I did is use 436 pistons and cut the crown down to work with the longer stroke 466 crank(If your using a 466) This is assuming your in a small turbo class.
Also if you use the small lifters, smooth the edges around the bottom face of the lifter, so they won't scrape the lobe on the opening and closing ramps. Its more work, but less now than doing it later. Good luck |

And straight up how many degrees? Thanks |

If you have a cam card for your cam it should say what the intake centerline is. That SHOULD be for the straight up (marks lined up) position. The only real way to figure where you are at is to use a degree wheel. |

All cams are different im building a dt361 to run on alcohoul vogel ground the cam .I installed it last night it went in at 109 dead on the marks I was shooting for 108 to 110 if you needed 98 you would have been in trouble you better check |

Mine was not ground by the same people, I actually bought mine off a puller who just built a bigger motor...Mine is at 96 degree....She lugs real good and has just a tiny little lope to it...466 with A pump, Cam and HX 50 charger...dont know what horsepower I am at but in 2H she acts like nothing is behind her going down the track...Going to shoot water in this winter she has about a 6 inch cone hanging out when she gets to about 200 ft... |

Smithcl7, the reason why it pulls like nothing is behind you is because your going WAYYYYYY too slow, with that combo you ought a be in road gear plus if properly dialed in! |
