What Makes a turbo chirp? October 16, 2011 12:46AM
I watch alot of pulls and some tractors won't chirp till they are way down in rpms and others will start before they even seem to lose any rpms . wondering what is causing this and what is happening to make them chirp.

the exhaust side of the turbo has to have more psi to keep the turbo turning hard, as the engine gets a load and the psi of both side start to equal or cross paths the turbo will chirp.

So that makes sence what would a person do to correct the problem?

its not a bad thing

This occurs when the turbo goes into surge. Surge happens when the turbo is pushing more air than the engine can consume. Basicly it starts to revert air out the compressor side to get rid of the excess, then it trys to build boost again until the same thing occurs. The purpose of a MWE grove is to keep this from happening for a longer time than a non slotted cover.

As the engine drops rpm the exhaust side pressure is not enough to keep building more intake pressure. The intake pressure being more than the exhaust pressure makes the turbo reverse direction (in the worst case) and this makes the chirp or "turbo bark" sound. You have to understand that this reversal happens to a system that is rotating in excess of 100,000 rpm's
This tends to be very hard on the compressor wheel and the turbo shaft. Years ago we used to see Lots of turbo failures and parts exiting out the stack. Typically this started with a shaft failure and explosion of the compressor wheel. With that the exhaust turbine breaks at the shaft and goes up the stack. The new tougher turbos can take this kind of abuse quite well.

So why is it in the single turbo tractor classes, that many of the drivers immediately after completing the pull, has to jab the throttle 2/3 times? Is it really necessary mechanically? or are they just getting another high thinking 'man, that sounds good, just wish I had more HP'.

Some people do it so the turbo doesn't spin backwards. Other do it because there tractor won't idle down but easy way to fix that is 2 stroke oil in the fuel. And then there are some that think they are the $h**.

When I'm finished at the end it takes a little bit for the pressure (boost pressure) to go down below where the switch is set for the water injection to come on and it will clean the water out of the intake manifold and cylinders
