4230 wet clutch March 29, 2013 08:01AM
Hey Guys:

Been working on a 1973 JD 4230. Ive had some clutch issues/hydraulic issues in past. Ive just got it to where I thought it was finished but Ive still got problems. Last fall I replaced transmission pump with new unit from deere, clutch pressure was 165 psi. I split tractor and installed a welded up 4 disk clutch. I modified valve body myself by plugging the pto brake port with pipe plug and ran an external jumper from pto clutch port to clutch port with a T in it to check pressure. I only have 65 psi of clutch pressure, sometimes with clutch pedal depressed it wants to try to move.

What is going on, where did my clutch pressure go? Did I modify valve body incorrectly? With the jumpers installed, the pto lever doesnt have to be engaged does it?

Thanks for the help.

You need to block off the oil supply, in the valve body, the goes to the pto clutch valve. I do belive, most guys use a piece of key stock

Need to make sure you have the correct ports plugged.. Not sure which part you modified on the valve body.. The easiest way is to remove the bottoms portion of the lube reduction valve.. If you remove the bottom part of lube you will need to plug the PTO brake and PTO ports.. Usually at the supply tubes is the easiest place..

PTO brake port is plugged at supply tube. An external jumper pipe is between pto clutch and clutch on valve body. Which pto port needs plugged other than pto brake? Does pto lever need to be engaged when running?

With the jumper.. You should just need the brake port plugged.. The PTO lever should be off.. But engaging the lever and check your pressure again.. I would bet it comes back.. Meaning you are losing your pressure in your valve body.. When the PTO lever is off its open to return unless you blocked it off in your modification to the valve..

Call Don Slama, 608-553-1528. He will exchange your valve for one that will work. He has done dozens of them. We got ours from him and works perfect.

to JDGnut. when you remove the lower portion of the lube reduction valve, do you then reinstall the pin before installing the upper portion of the valve? thanks in advance

Put the stop pin back in.. It will keep the lube valve from moving too far down... If you have a Repair manual it has a good picture showing the Lube valve, and you can see where the oil is going..

We are having issues with a 4230 as well. Our issue is that we have no clutch at the foot pedal. We have PTO and Brakes and Steering. We can start the tractor in gear but have no idea what it could be. Not sure wether to split it and replace clutch or what to do. thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a traction clutch valve body problem or the oring on the traction clutch engage piston problem ( aka throw out bearing piston)

When I did mine after hooking together I had to make a short piece to hold the pto on all the time
