5488 transmission June 13, 2013 11:30AM
I have a 5488 and I had a 466 built that is supposedly pushing 650hp. I ran it once and the tranny slipped on me so I'm wondering what I could do to make it straight 6 gears or if there are any transmissions made that will fit into the 5488 rear end........

Roll a 706 or 1066 rear end behind it & call it good?? You're gonna pull you're hair out trying to boost oil pressures to get master & shift packs to hold in a 5488 tranny

The problem with rolling 66 or 86 rear end up to it is that I need to be stock appearing......

I want to say I remember reading here about a Magnum Super Farm years ago that still used a highly modified Magnum tranny & rear end, but I can't recall who it was, much less how it would have ever been set up

Build a Moline and beat them all

I have a 5488 very similar. Made one pass last year with no slippage. Was set at 280 psi clutch pressure. Stock is 240 . This year I've set it up to 325. I think one could bolt the high or low up solid , but if your master clutch is the one slipping it would do you no good. Very interested if anyone on here has any experiance with this transmission, as I may be fighting the same battle. Good luck

There are some things that you can do with the plumbing to increase the pressure. Had a magnum tranny hold up pretty good but they have a lot more clutch packs and other crap to go bad with increased pressure. I wouldn't waste my time with it. Any way you do it, its going to be alot of work. Get a 66 series tranny, but then you will have to make adapter plates. Or just put a profab in the case.

I am thinkiong about the profab tranny. I need the tractor to be stock apperaing and I went with the 5488 because I had a 466 motor with the inline pump......I wanted to keep the inline......I don't need to downshift at all, so a profab would work, or how would I be able to put a 66 tranny in it with adapter plates?????

You could easily put a clutch off the engine but you would have to engine drive your trans lube and pressure pump because the stock pump would quit every time you pushed in the clutch. The size and number of 2 speed disks looks on paper way heavier than a quad range
