JD 4040
|
Is it a strong enough candidate to build into a 3000rpm/466cu hot farm? weight classes at 10500-14000 |

been there. wont happen. find a 4440 |
Re: JD 4040

Why won't it work with a 466 motor???? |
Re: JD 4040

Thats what im asking too,it is a nice light platform! |
Re: JD 4040

The 4040 is basically a 4020 isn't it? The 4440 looks to be to heavy. Why wouldn't a 466 work in it? |

they ARE the SAME. The 4440 has a overdrive 2 speed which means direct is low side of 2 speed and they put smaller stub shafts with bigger planetary gears to slow the trans back down to same ground speed as the 4040 |
Re: JD 4040

So why the heck wont a 4040 work in a 466/3000rpm class. Everyone know the 4020 can handle big power |

4040 trans will live alot longer than a 4020 trans,The 4020 input shaft and your syncr pack on the top shaft will be the first to go, especially if you try to run 8th gear,7th gear is not so much the problem but we all know 7th gear will have you about 50 feet in back of the pack |
Re: JD 4040

hmmm,
Still torn between the 4240 or trying the 4040. Definitely plan on running the synchro. The 4240 run the stock pump? adapter plate and A pump? Or find a late model 466 out of a 4450/4455? |

4040 is basically a late 4230,404 non turboed.4240 had the 466 naturally aspirated. 4440 already had the 466 turbo inline pump. If you want a good tractor to start with without changing engines the 4440 would be the way to go but heavy. Shouldn't be too heavy for 10,500-14,500. You could get 4040 in 9500 very easily. You could also install 8.1 liter out of combine into any of these tractors. Some work will probably be needed with water pump/fan and front balancer/crank pulley unless you plan on running non farm stock where you can run an electric water pump and don't plan on running factory hydraulic pump, otherwise some fabrication parts changing will need done.
Do you plan to upgrade quad range clutch before getting a big start on adding power? Probably wont last long stock. |
Re: JD 4040

Planned on running the synchro trans, not real familiar with the quad. Would a 4240 work better, having a longer wheel base it seems it would
give better balance, and already having a 466 I would think it would have less fitment issues when adding power up grades? |

The quad just adds a 2 speed to the syncro.. (Basically..) they problem as stated.. 7th will be too slow.. 8th too fast.. The quad will help split the gap.. Or you can go to 4010 finals if you need to speed up 7th.. If you search on here.. KTA and others have listed how to build the 2 speed.. |
Re: JD 4040

So just how much hp and abusr can a quad handle respectively ? |
Re: JD 4040

My plan is to run a 4240 with a late 466 out of a 4455. I just wanted to see if there was any advantages to running a 4040. But I don't want to get involved in a ton of one off parts to make the bigger motor fit. I'm gonna stick with the synchro .A few guys here have removed 5th and installed a custom 7.5 gear and its performing great. Am I correct in thinking the 4240 can be built to stay around 10,000lbs? |

Yes.. That was my plan too.. But 750-1200 for the 7.5... Or 36-4200 for a 3 speed.. I just did right the first time.. But I would like to have tried it with a quad.. But just decided to start with the 4020 instead.. ( other was 4230) the perma clutch mods will be the same.. The 2 speed will hold but can be upgraded with extra clutches and plates with a little work.. Now I'm saving for a good clutch.. on the other side If I had gone the quad route.. I'd already be pulling.. |
Re: JD 4040

So you wish you would have run a quad? ive been told its limit is 850hp. honestly im not that familiar with the quad, and that's why im going synchro, havent looked at the three speed, but im gonna |

I would like to have tried the quad.. Just to try it.. It would be nice to be able to shift.. But In the end I think I would have wanted a 3 speed.. I got a good offer from someone to build one.. And couldn't pass it up.. It depends on how far you are going to go.. If you go to a dry clutch.... Most end up with a 4020 clutch housing.. So again.. I just started there.. Costing more $$$ in the beginning.. |
Re: JD 4040

Plan on going all the way at some point. price shopping right now on the exact model tractor I want to use. 4040, 4430.4240 can get them with either trans.
just figured the 4240 would be easier to drop a later model with turbo 466 in. im trying to avoid bring a tractor in and tearing into it then realizing.... sh@#$ should of went with a different model |

4040 makes a great puller with a 466, just need to push front axle out about 8in,makes it easier to balance. |
