John deere 404 engine September 22, 2013 12:12PM
How much can I push my 404 A pumped engine before its time to increase size? I know I could do a complete out of frame over haul and use higher grade components. But can it be made reliable enough to handle hot farm 3000 rpm and hold its own.Just looking for some advice, I know its more reliable to put a 466 in it rather than bore the 404. should I be looking for a 466 ( which I have found) or can I push the 404 alittle more say 400-500 hp ?

I know certain models put out a respectable 200hp in power units and combines. Im nearing that mark but looking at what would be more cost affective as we progress up in classes. Maybe it would be cheaper to just get the 466, but it would be nice to turn a few heads with a 404.

In our class Deeres make between 550-675hp with a 404. We have 13mm p pumps water and limited rpms. All stock cranks, rods, pistons. No problems. Run straight cut gears, fire ring it, cut pistons for valve clearance, and run her.

Buy a 55 series 466 and be a lot of money ahead in the long run.

I have found that type of motor, and know what its capable of. thought it might be worth seeing what the ole 404 could give the competition with out emptying the checkbook. Especially if there holding together.

If you are going to use the stock parts that are in the 404...
If you have to rebuild the 404.. might as well be putting the parts in a 466.. cost won't be much or any different..
If you are looking at going to a P pump.. no sense in spending the money on an A pump..

You might get more $$$ for your 404 in running condition...

If you are just going to turn the screws to the pump your self, and run the stock parts in the 404... I'd go for it..

We cant use water, and we have a charger size limit. But those are some encouraging numbers. And they are holding together.

If the class you want to run in has a "466" size limit, you'd be a fool to build a 404. How do you think you're going to make up for 40 less cubic inches ??

So I have a turboed 4010 stock crank 16to 1 pistons and your saying I can put an A pump I was told in the past that gives damage to your crank.

Alright, alright I'll go pick up the 466....geez lol! I know the 55 series are the one to get is there any casting numbers or models that are better than others? I've done some research on them but haven't found anything that shows which one were better, more or less just ones that certain people had luck or trouble with. found one in NY that they claim is out of a 4455

Re: John deere 404 engine September 23, 2013 12:22PM
The 4455 engine will be also be an A pump block.. Depends on your class..
Can you decube to 466??

Re: John deere 404 engine September 23, 2013 01:15PM
Our class might increase cubes, due to all the 6030's squawking. wont know till end of season. Right now the rules state, 466 max, p-pump allowed no truck engines, must be same manufacture as the tractor, and no power adders (ie water/meth0
