2+2 front axle March 26, 2014 02:54PM
A while back I seen a front axle off of a 2+2 on eBay sell for what I thought was crazy money so it made me wonder if it was just because two people need one or if they were being used in the pulling world as maybe a component rear end? Just wondering

I wouldnt know why it was "crazy" money because a 2+2 is made from using 2 1086 rearends. They are still tractor "cast" rearends so NO for component building

The front axle of a 2+2 is not a 1086 you are thinking of a 4586 or around that I'm not saying they are any heavier but for sure not a 86 or 66 rear end and I felt like 4500 dollars was a lot for one of those.

Well then the IH publication I read musta been WRONG as it said the EARLY/FIRST 2+2 were made from 2 1086 rearends. I will notify that publisher that they are wrong and need to check with someone who knows. LOL

I'll get you a picture they are for sure not a 1086 axle the neighbor down the road still has 4 of them looked at them the other day and I am 1000% positive that none of the have a 1086 turned around but another neighbor has a 4586 and it has a 1086 rear end for a front axle but not the 2+2'S

The thing is .............. I dont really care LOL I repeated what I read from an IH publication . The point I was really making was ..NO its cast tractor parts and will not be used in a component build

It's probably ok though if you have an ac that uses f gleaner final drives on a component.

A 2+2 axle will bring good money, for the simple fact that the ring & pinion, and differential are very hard to come by if repairs are needed. The front axle of a 2+2 IH (33, 35, 37, 63, 65, 6788) are not heavy axles, the internals are much like those from the smaller IH 574, 674 utility tractors. The IH 510/515 payloaders used similar axles, only with planetary hubs rather than bar axles.

Used to farm with one in the early 80s. Ring and pinion on the front went out. We were able to get new gears but all the ring gear bolts were bad and unavailable. They were a special made bolt that we couldn't find. Fortunately Brent Long was able to make me new bolts out of his stock. Nice to have friends that can make anything. Really liked that tractor.
