466 in an International 766: Will the Rear End Survive?

I'm thinking of building a 766 puller on 20.8x38 tires for the 10k+ lb farmstock classes. I'm looking at dropping a 466ci diesel in a 766 gas tractor.
Will the rear handle the power of a hopped up 466? (300+ horsepower) How much power will the rear handle? Should I be looking for a 966 or bigger instead? Is the rear the same between any models? (766, 966, 1066, 1466) Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

4.1 and beyond

There is 4.1s pulling with 706 reareds running over 2000 hp so I would say yes |

That sounds promising, although I'm going to be using a stock rear. I'm guessing the 4.1 tractor has some upgraded parts in it? |

for a while

It will for a while then you will seize your spider gears in the differential. It won't matter if it's a 7, 9, 10, or 14, they aren't built to last with that much hp. You will have to needle the cross in the diffential and it will last a long time. As 4.1 and beyond says, most of the big tractors are running 706 rears but they have been modified to take the power. |

downshift

Might want to consider changing ring and pinion. 766 gas r+p plus 300 hp 466 plus 20.8x38 tires means pulling in
low side of transmission. |

I completely disagree with you on that he will need to be in low range. I used to pull a 1066 with a stock 414, 11mm pump, and a 3lm out of box charger and pulled in high 2 and never had to pull the TA back. That was on both 18.4 and 20.8 tires. Was turning around 325 horse at rated RPM. I pulled in 10700 and 11700 farm stock class at 2849 RPM |

1066 ring and pinion 13/51. 766 gas 13/49......jus' sayin'. |

We can do all types of mods or repairs. We don't have a website, but we do have a Facebook page, T High performance. With what you are doing you might want to look into having your differential needle bearinged. It will help keep you going in a straight line. We are located in South Haven, Michigan. Give me a call anytime if you need any pulling issues resolved. Thanks! |

You won't have any trouble with the stock rear end until you start running high 3rd and road gear ! But I think u will be making more than 300 hp. most stock 466's are between 210 hp to 250hp from the factor so 300 should be easily accomplished! With a good fuel system and a decent turbo you should be able to make upward of 400hp! The stock 766 gas transmission and rearend will handle it just fine the stock clutch will not ! My advice is to go on and spend the money on a good sfi 3disc which I know is over kill right know but will save u lots of money in the long run, and will allow you to run a higher gear than the other tractor because u will be able to slip the clutch a lot more out of the hole and not hurt it . Do not change the ring and pinion the 13/49 will be the one u want and you will still be able to run in the high side with it ! High 3rd is the weakest spot in the Ih transmission so be careful when u start making Enough power to run that gear but until then have fun !!!!! |

Thanks for all of the info and responses. I'm going to go ahead and see if I can get ahold of this 766 and put it together. (Already have the engine). I'll look into a larger clutch as well. Anymore info or responses, please send them my way! |

Track dirt type varies so much around the country,no one equation fits all, have pulled all over in many venues with half dozen different tractors, clay is rare, silty clay is not. |

I have a 766 that had a gas and I put a d414 out of a 966 in it with a good fuel system and turbo and knock on wood no issues yet, still has as far as I know a stock TA! I don't plan on going higher in rpms so I just got a super heavy duty 14" pressure plate, 6 button clutch and stock flywheel and 20.8x38 and no problems yet pulling 250HP in 10500, 11000,12000 and 13000 5mph and 8mph. Also I still farm with this tractor and always plan to.
Disturbed mx Andrew what kind of mods do you have? Do you have a website? Location? |
