How do I harden a tire? April 08, 2016 10:45AM
I pull an antique with 18.4-38 full cut tires and I am looking for a home remedy on how to harden a tire, My tires are a little too soft on the treads. I know I can take em and have em baked in an oven but does anyone have any old back yard basics way of doing this? Thanks

Yes- but you are going to need a really big kitchen oven........

You can pour salt all over them. It sucks the moisture out. It will also slightly shrink the tire sometimes. Not an overnight process though, it still takes a long time. You'd probably be better off getting them baked.

I don't know the process they use to bake tires however this is just an idea we made a small scale solar oven in science back in grade school so I'm wondering if you couldn't use cinder blocks and old window panes to make one large enough to bake your own. Again don't know what temp you would need or how long it would have to maintain temp but it might be a backwoods solution to save a few bucks just might take a little more research. Good luck with it.

Just leave them out in the sun or if your in a hurry, lacquer thinner will make a rubber o ring brittle. What would it do to a rubber tire?
