20.8 vs 18.4 Hot Farm Tires April 14, 2016 11:44AM
Hello everyone, I have a question regarding tire choices for an IH 1066 that I pull in a sanctioned hot farm class. Currently, my tractor has a pretty nice pair of Firestone 20.8 38 tires on it and I usually hook in high 3rd and use the TA to get going and at the end. Depending on the track, sometimes it will spin out and other times it will chirp. Since most of the sleds I pull are what some people call "speed sleds," I have been wondering what using 18.4-38 tires and trying high 4th would do. Usually, the person who can pick up the most speed going down the track will be the winner. I don't know if I would have the power for road gear, but there is a significant height and width difference between 20.8 and 18.4 firestones, so it seems possible. Has anybody tried this with good luck, or am I just dreaming with my idea? Thanks for any input or opinions!

When you say nice do you mean they have a lot of tread or what. Can you run Cut Tires ? If not put on a pair of Bald 20.8's you will be surprised how well they work.

Bad medicine is right. Back when we had the 10mm A pump on our 4430 we had a set of 35% firestone 20.8-38 radials that we could run in B 3&4 and always spin but couldn't get the speed we needed, from time to time it would bite in and win the class but usually it was in 3rd or 4th. My dad found a set of BALD (less than 5% tread) firestone 20.8-38 radials and we could run D 1&2 in the heavy classes and get C 3&4 on a loose one. Balder tires can be a blessing, took us from getting constantly beat to in the top 2 most weekends.

I should have clarified, the tires I have now are worn quite a bit and I would consider them to be 10-15%. I guess I said nice because they are worn evenly and seem about perfect for pulling. I suppose they could be worn down a little more to give less bite.

What are the rules for your 'hot farm' class?

When I switched from 18.4 to 20.8 on my 966 I gained 2mph give or take 1/2 mph ( depending on track). Idk what ur gear jump is (if u have custom set ). And what ring and pinion u have. But u also gotta think that a 20.8 has alot more of a foot print. And if u have enough power to run high third with 20.8 in my opinion if ud went down to 18.4 u might not ever be able to put it to the ground.
