JD 585 May 28, 2009 12:26PM
What is easiest and most cost effective way to build a 585 ci engine out of a JD 466? Which pistons to use and what has to be done to them, how much does crank need stroked, what rods need to be used?
Thanks

I would use Darton 4 3/4" sleeves, Caterpillar 3306 pistons, International 466 rods and stroke the crank 3/4". You will need to machine a little off the top of the pistons, machine the bowls out bigger and cut the valve reliefs. You will also need to install a thicker bushing in the rods to accept the 1 1/2" wristpin of the Caterpillar pistons.

by the time you spend all the money machining the CAT pistons is it much cheaper than buying a good set of pistons?

I have 8 billet pistons that will work for this with 1.5" bore. 6 used 2 new. $1000

You can buy Cat pistons for $55.00 each and I can get them machined for $20.00 each. So a whole set would be 450.00. I believe a set of custom pistons would be about $1,650.00

Where is cheapest/easiest place to get a set of 3306 pistons? I've called a few cat dealers and other yards and they dont have them. Something about cat has a core on their used pistons?

Here is a link to one place to get them. When the page comes up, type in the part number "8n3182" in the right column and it will bring up a page where you can buy these pistons.
