John deere 4000 syncro good March 02, 2017 10:19AM
Is a john deere 4000 syncro rear end good for a to hot to farm puller?

Should be a good start.not sure how much HP you are thinking,I think they are a 4020 diff and trans with 3020 axles.

Quite certain a 4000 rear is actually a 4010 rear - 3 1/8" axle versus 4020, 4320, very early 4430 at 3 3/8" axle. 4000 featured the last series 4020 engine, commonly known as the "side console". Best 4020 engine of the 3 series of engines in a 4020 - most horsepower and by far a tremendously increased torque curve. But hardest engine of the 3 to start with its higher compression. Once running, it sure was a workhorse of an engine, which happened to be a 'new' engine design compared with the early and mid-series 4020's. I have lots of operating hours on all those engine versions.

Had a '69 side console 4020 and one of the last 4000's built. Loved the 4000. They were always and only a side console model. High horsepower to weight ratio with a great balance requiring not much front weight to pull even a big load. Great tractor in wet ground, especially muck. 4020/4000 replaced a lot of crawlers and other tractor brands to sucessfully farm highly productive muck, that had previously been a challenge to get a machine to float across.

So with 'someone' in Doug Roberts posting in LSS rules saying a 4020 was a poorly designed tractor, 'someone' obviously likely never farmed with a 4020. Just look how popular they still are today and the price they fetch compared with the competitors.

4010 tractor was gone 7years before 4000 was interduced.we owned brand new 3 4020s,we were told buy John Deere at the time that a 4000 was a cheaper and lighter Verson of a 4020 made for pulling 4bottom plows a gear higher than a 4020.4000s came with no battery boxes 1remote and 3020 axle only standard transmission no power shift no lock rear end.customers started asking for 2 remotes and a lock rear end and power shifts so John Deere quit production because they were basically just making a 4000 that now cost the same as a 4020.

4000 did have locking rear

They did produce 4000 powershift tractors in both gas and diesel models. Dual remote versions were available as well.

"Larry", did you mis-type a number? 4020 & 856 were competitors same as 4000 & 826.
826 is a stripped down 856. If I recall correctly, it was introduced first. Then Deere came with 4000.

Lots of 4010 chassis over the decades have been quite successful which should mean a 4000 will be too and have been.
A McKinnon brother had a new one each year jacked up for national competition according to the Legends story on McKinnon's.
Think there was a Paulhamas from Florida that pulled a 4000 SS.

600+ hp i only have a 404 in it for now .. i know ill have to modify the clutch but will the gears hold up?

Re: John deere 4000 syncro good March 03, 2017 03:52AM
It's hard to say if it will hold or not.......depends how agressive you are with the clutch, how stout the track is, how much bite you're getting.

My past experiences with 4010 say you are riding a fine line......like playing russian roulette. Some early/simple failures will be shearing keys off the syncro mesh on the top shaft......then you risk the top shaft front bearing quill letting go, and thats when things get expensive! Usually that strips the front set of gears. At that point you have essentially a scrap stock trans, assuming things didn't jam too hard and rupture the case.

Honestly you are best to go with a proper three speed right out of the gate. It's a big chunk to bite off, but better then the "Pay me now or pay me later theory"......

It's been said here before, everyone wants to start at the engine and work away from there. Really you should start at the axle and work your way back to the engine. Better chance of success without failure.

Gears will hold up to about 450 HP or so. Up to 7th gear you should be OK.no faster

Re: John deere 4000 syncro good March 03, 2017 01:00PM
I have a 4000 pulled it many years with about 600 hp no problem s with gears or transmission parts the clutch you will have problems put a good 3 disc in and needle bearing the spyder gears and strip it down to 7500 lbs you will be all set to run 8th with a reel good fuel pump and a good turbo
Now the 4000 is around 1200 hp still using same rear end and axle no problems yet

Re: John deere 4000 syncro good March 03, 2017 01:07PM
Your 404 must have a lot done to it for that kind of hp!

Re: John deere 4000 syncro good March 02, 2017 03:23PM
Love the 4000/4020 and the 4010, we have a 4000 and two 4010s with that being said the 4000 was a cheap option of the 4020 but if you put all the options
on the 4000 it cost as much as the 4020 . we went threw this with our 4000 there are a lot of parts for the rear end that John Deere does not offer any more for the
rear end on that tractor, with that being said we had to do a lot of updating we had to change a lot of the rear end over to 4020 parts .
4000 4010 and 3020 have the same axle diameter where it changes it in the bearing mounts all three mount in diff locations and 4000 axles can not be bought
new from JD .

Re: John deere 4000 syncro good March 03, 2017 05:57AM
Fact Not Fiction. The 4000 is the same transmission and clutch housing as a late model 4020. The 4000 did not have a reverse synchronizer. Remainder of internal parts is all late model 4020. Part book don't lie. 4000 had a unique set of final drives that had a smaller axle diameter. Final drive housing are different and rare! If you fail one you upgrade to 4020 axle and final drive. DW

There were 403 4000 Diesel power shift tractors and 9 power shift gas.The 4000 was about 10% lighter and 10% cheaper. They actually sell a little better than side counsel 4020s.They were available in later production with HFWA and A/C cab.The rear end had 3 1/8 axles and lighter cast wheels but they never had an issue with rear end being tough enough. If you could find a Mexican 4455 you would have the 466w/turbo and syngro plus they were lighter. The last 4000 gas P.S. that sold at auction brought over $80K.There were 8095 total 4000s produced and built to compete with 856 custom.
