Need help getting a 358 German diesel running May 19, 2017 02:31PM
Stock 358 German in a payloader.Spun a bearing and ruined the crankshaft. Got a different one and after installing and reassembling cannot get the timing set right to get it to start Looking for advice please. Any chance the pump has a intervance? I have tried it at 16° And then turned it 180

Which pump does it have? At least 3 different pumps where used stock on those engines and all three have an internal advance to the best of my knowledge..

I have seen them with a Bosch BR, CR and even a VE pump stock and then stanadyne pumps aftermarket.

Check the timing marks on the crank you took out. Sometimes between Industrial and Ag engines, timing marks are different.

What is the stroke of a 310 and a 358 I will call the shop that polished the crank and find out what it measured.

310 Stroke 4.375"
358 Stroke 5.0625"

The timing gear has several different marks for different engines so you need to have a factory service manual to be sure you are using the correct mark

What do you call the "timing gear", Do you mean the idler gear that meshes the crank drive with the cam gear and Pump gear? If it was incorrect, wouldn't I have bent push rods from the valves hitting Pistons by now?

I'm sure he is referring to the pump "timing" gear.

Finally got back to this project. Thanks for the help. We figured out it is a 310 crank. Can't find a good 358 crank. Was told the Pistons measure the same. Can we just switch out the rods and use these pistons? Will they have the correct compression ratio? Or is this not a good solution?

I believe 310 block has a shorter deck height than 358

I guess I hit the the nail on the nail on the head about the crankshaft .The 310 and 358 the best bet is find a crank you wont like the 310 give me a few days and I can find one but rods and pistons from the 206 4cyl 584 ih tractor engine may work
