If you could give advice to someone that wanted to promote a pull, what are the most common mistakes new promoters make and how do you avoid making them? |

If you pull is at night... Lights!!!! If you don't have them, rent some construction lights or get some donated from rental company.
Sound system.. If people can't hear whats going on, they lose interest, and they leave. Both of the above tie for #1. --- |

Find someone with experience to help build the track. You can't start the day of the pull and have a top notch track. There is such a thing as too much water.
Have plenty of equipment to maintain the track, and hopefully operators that know what they are doing. Start on time. The pullers and the crowd appreciate it. Don't try and have too many classes. A 3-4 hour show is plenty long. Walk the pits, thank the pullers for being there. If you can find a BBQ place that wants to feed them, great. Along with the sound system, try to find an announcer that knows what he is talking about, and can keep the crowd involved. Have a mix of vehicles, unless you know your crowd wants all trucks or all tractors. Not everybody wants to see all of one or the other. |

Advertising. it is difficult to know where to advertise in todays market. Radio, TV, internet, social media, cable, newspapers and others. difficult to determine how to reach the market for pulling fans. If nobody knows about the pull the stands will be empty. Good track, suitable seating, lights, RESTROOMS, admission prices, concessions, track equipment- Packers and scrapers and someone that KNOWS how to operate them and the list goes on. |

A big key to success I believe is getting the pullers on board, make it place they want to come
to. They in turn talk about it, get more pullers and fans interested, and it snowballs from there. Keeping in mind you cannot make everyone happy all the time and Mother Nature can make It difficult at times, but most spectators and pullers can see if good effort is made and will Come back for a great show next year. |

try to keep show moving? have some one aggressively lining up the competitors? but that also requires a quick working track crew..and enough equipment! V-blades work well in most tracks? wobble wheel packers work well!,the nervous turtle (hyway drum packer) is too slow! and forget the payloader for leveling!..Try to have enough food venders as people like to eat and watch show? not stand in line? Quality sound system is important! good knowledgeable announcer! after all they are part of the show too! if possible have the crowd farther back from the track then everyone will have better sight lines? how much seating is tough to gauge? until you have run a few years? better to have people sitting then hanging off the fences? and talk to promoters from other events, most would be happy to help you with a few pointers |

Start on time ,minimum delays, well prepared track, sled operator that wants a fast moving show and lets them pull at least 250/300 ft or more, a courteous staff that wants a good show, and safety crew that is prepared. Its usually more about having fun than the top money.Alcohol is better in the fuel tank of alcohol burners but usually not a problem but if it is it needs to be handled in right way. Rules enforced before pull rather than after. |

Another thought

Here's another one. The main pull director/promoter cannot have to also worry about his own truck or tractor if they are a puller. They should turn the reins over to someone else that night b/c you cannot serve two masters. Promoters that also try to pull generally end up doing a poor job at both. |
