Farm Stock Deere August 06, 2018 12:45PM
We have a Deere with a 404, cube rules so we can't go any bigger.

Does anyone know if an 8.1 head will fit right on a 404? Any advice on improving flow if an 8.1 head doesn't fit?

I was told that the valves will hit the sleeves on a 404 due to the smaller bore in the 404 it puts the valves above the sleeves. Not sure what your setup is but to much air flow could hurt you rather than help you. You need to have the proper fuel and air ratio to make the most power. To much of 1 and not the other is no good.

Ok thanks for the info.

I should be able to get enough fuel, bigger lines, injectors, and 450 head in the pump. Pump isn't opened all the way. 3LM for a turbo. Stock internals and manifolds.

I run a 404 in a 4020 with 450 pump and 3LM charger, had Riverside do the head and cam and runs very well with that setup.

Thanks for the info. What manifolds are you running? I just have the stock 4320 manifold on there right now.

4440 intake, and 4455 exhaust

55 series or 8.1L head won’t fit on the 404. On my 4020 I’ve got a 40 series head worked over by riverside, which is the most you can do with the 404. Using 55 series exhaust and intake manifolds and s300 turbo.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm getting closer, it just doesn't seem to breathe right. I think with manifolds and head work it should wake up! What crossover pipe did you end up using?

I used a later serial number 4430 adapter from intake to turbo, had to customize it a little but was able to go directly from intake to turbo without crossover. Likely there is a better way but it worked!

Are you running the 4020 narrow block with pencil injectors or the old style 4010 block with the big injectors?

I’m using a 30 series A pump block and KDEL injectors. For a crossover tube with the S300 I’m using steel pipe that snakes around front of the exhaust manifold with water injection ports that I welded up.
