JD 466 engine
|
I recently purchase a 466 engine out of a 4440.The guy that i got it from has switched out the original A pump with an A pump that does not have the aneroid device on it. I'm wanting to build the motor to pull in the 3000 rpm range. I have been told that the turbo will not work properly with out the aneroid. looking for good advice. |

You will be fine running without the aneroid on the pump it is not needed for pulling. |

The only advice I would give you is, if you are having someone help you that thinks the turbo wont work without the aneroid wouldnt be the best person to get pulling advice from! |

What does the aneroid do in the pump? |

when the pump comes under load the diaphram increases the fuel delivery. The reason that pullers dont use them is when the pump is remade to a puller pump they set the governor rack to do the same except that it sends it into full fuel not proportioned to the boost pressure |

What is the main difference between an A-pump and a P-pump? |

there is a physical size differance as well as capability. for ease you will most likely use an a pump as alot of 466 sb's came with them. your rules will dictate what you can use. A p-pump can be put on a 466 sb as certain makes came with them , if yours didnt you can machine the hole out and put the bolt pattern in it . An A-pump can produce a fair amount of fuel (700cc) but at a cost and reliability and slower delivery time. A p-pump makes alot more fuel (1000cc) at alot lower cost in the pump with faster delivery but you will spend more to get it mounted etc. |

get a good aftermarket clutch the single disc wont hold with a good running 404 |
Re: JD 466 engine

what kind of clutch do you think will hold up well with the 466 engine |

Many people sell them. You want a 2 disk, probably a 3 to be durable. Look in the builders section on this site or in the for sale section. Places like TPP, Kennys pulling parts, GMS. Where are you located? |

I had my stock clutch beefed up by a builder and has worked great for over 5 years. I pull 7th gear in 9000lb class an 6th in the heavier classes at 3000rpms. A disk clutch is great but a lot of money and also check the rules where you pull. |

jd43 i take it that you have a 4320 with a 466 in it. If so i would like to give you a call by phone. I have some more question. |

I run the stock 404 with a rotary pump and 2.4 turbo. I would like to go with a 496/8.1 and an A pump in the future. |

Thats what i'm pulling with right now. i pull in a stock farm class with an 8 m.p.h rule in 5th gear. I would love to pull in a different class but my tractor want pull the sled in 6 or 7th gear that's why i want to go to the 466. I read where you said you were pulling in 6 and 7th gear. i must be doing something wrong. |

The 496 came from the factory with a P pump, so if you HAD to have an A pump then you will need an adapter. A few places make them and i think they are around $400. |

I've never heard of a 496. what tractors were they in |

a 496 is an 8.1 |

Some of the 8.1L engines had a A-pump from the factory. |
Re: JD 466 engine

496 is news to me too, where are the extra cubes coming from? crank/bore size??
thanks |

The stroke is 5.060" and bore is same as 466. Also the 8.1L 496 engines have been around since 1994. |
Re: JD 466 engine

interesting, what model tractor/combine etc was this 8.1L fitted in? Is this a waterloo engine or german?
In europe we run 510" max for prostock, this 496" engine would be good in standard format, save all the hassle with stroked cranks etc! I take it that this 8.1L 496" engine will accept 466" head etc? Thanks |

The 8.1L engine is a JOHN DEERE not a GERMAN and came in alot of tractors and combines along with some other machines as well. All 8400 tractors and the late 81-82-8300 tractors had the 8.1L. 81-82-83-8410 tractors & 77-7810 tractors are some and for combines would be 9510 & 9610 along with 9550 9650 9750 and some of the 60 series combines as well. The later 8.1L engines have the common-rail fuel system on them. The late 7.6L cylinder heads are the same as the earlier 8.1L heads. Also the 8.1L crankshaft has large counter weights and has straight cut timing gears like the late 7.6L engines. |

When Mannheim Magic built in 2000-2001, it had the 8.1 engine.
Sleeves and billet pistons had to be custom made anyway, so bore was increased from 4 9/16 to 4 5/8, resulting in exactly 510 cu. in. The engine had the stock 8.1 crank, and the sleeves had a slighty reduced wall thickness, to fit in the 8.1 block, without the need to machine the block for larger outside diameter sleeves. I am pretty sure Mannheim Magic was the first prostock in Europe to use the 8.1 engine. |

What would they have come out of? The ones I know of are some 850 dozers, 9650 combines, power units. Every one I've seen has a P pump mount. |

The earlier 7710 & 7810 tractors had an A-pump. |
Re: JD 466 engine

Thanks for the good info. Not being very clued up on counter weights, is the heavier counterweight arrangement bad news for higher revs, for example in a prostock revving to 5500rpm ? |

These engines will not fit a waterloo row crop tractor, correct? Dont they use a different block with a different mounting pattern? |

The 8.1L bell housing bolt pattern is the same as 404 466 engines. And also the 8.1L that I used in a pro stock had the same frame bolt pattern as a 4020. |

Will the 8.1 crank physically fit into a 404 block? |

What prevents it from fitting in a 404? Just too much stroke? Will it fit in a 466? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/19/2016 01:35PM by 3010JD. |

You can have the mains turned down and then get that area nitrided. REI does it, but it isn't cheap. |
