Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 03:16AM
Two days left in the school year here in northeast Missouri.
My students are running wild and I'm daydreaming about my summer pulling schedule.

How would you rank the 13 Grand National Classes? (Or Champions Tour or Outlaw classes.) Here's my personal list. Totally arbitrary. Just what I like watching most to least.

1. Unlimited Modifieds
2. Diesel Super Stock Tractors
3. Modifieds.
4. Super Stock Open
5. Four Wheel Drive Trucks
6. Pro Stocks.
7. Light Super Stocks.
8. Mini Rods.
9. Super Farm.
10. Light Unlimited.
11. Super Semi.
12. Two Wheel Drive Trucks
13. Diesel Super Stock Trucks.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 03:57AM
13 way tie. To me every class has elements of it that I like. Granted there is some aspects of certain classes that I don't like, but all in all I'll watch any class any day.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 06:25AM
They are all good, like another said, can watch any and all anytime, some are boring, but then in a class,ONE breaks the barriers out the end and is exciting, the dance and wiggles some make with no bounce, nasty bounce and perfect runs is anticipation and the secret to watching, - we never know what will happen. HEAR THE POWER, -FEEL THE NOISE !!!!!!!

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 07:16AM
I, too, agree that I’ll take any of the 13 on any given day. A bad day watching a tractor pull beats a good day doing about anything else. That being said…..

2. PS
3. MINI
4. TWD
5. SSD 4X4
6. MOD
7. SSD
8. SSO
9. LT UNL (agreed, RIP)

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 20, 2022 01:42AM
Why is there such a difference between the north and south tracks at BG? I have never been there do they not work the whole surface and reroll it all back in all together? what makes the difference??

BG North track May 21, 2022 01:58PM
The north track at BG has less run off, so the worry with Unlimited is not getting them stopped before they go 400ft and into the wall. There is no difference in quality of dirt between the two tracks.

The quality of track between the two was worlds different. Thursday night on the North track veteran drivers struggled to stay on the track. Several broke things when they failed to control their unlimited.

Two days later they hooked up on the South track and everybody pulled just fine no issues at all. There was a difference in the quality of the track.

Not being privy to conversations between NTPA Tech Officials and Bauer sled operator, I cannot prove or disprove this statement.

I will say, however, that if the operator of the Bauer sled is worried about stopping the unlimiteds before going 400 feet, there need to be conversations between NTPA and Bauer. The track may now be 350' long, but there's no rule that says the sled has to be set "light" enough that 400 feet is going to be an issue except in a rare case (I know 'light' is a relative term with the unlimited class).

Besides, the puller is not blindfolded. Indoors, they can see the approaching sand pile. Outdoors, barring a runaway sled situation, they should see if a barrier is rapidly approaching.

For a long time, 300 feet worked fine. Then 310, then 320, then 330. At some point, someone needs to be the adult in the room. Just as God said in the book of Job that the sea shall go no farther, someone in the pulling world needs to stand and say "thou shalt not pull thine sled any farther."

Fine tuning the unlimiteds May 18, 2022 07:21AM
I would also say Unlimited #1, but for the two Ohio tracks I've been to recently, I'd break it down even more:

1. Ft. Recovery
2. Bowling Green (south track)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
10. Bowling Green (north track) Anyone please let me know when the unlimiteds last put on a good show on the BG North track. Just run both their hooks on the south track and be done with it. I bet the pullers would be ok with that also.

Re: Fine tuning the unlimiteds May 18, 2022 10:46AM
I'd put Wellington's track in there too.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 07:43AM
1. Prostock
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

9.
10.
11.
12.
13. Super Farm

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 07:46AM
What makes a class good? Is it the speed, power, closeness of competition? There are a few classes that always get bashed and they provide some of the tightest competition.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 08:03AM
I'd watch any class over not seeing any pulling. That was a solid lesson learned during the covid year when there wasn't much pulling to watch. But I certainly have my favorites....

1. Pro Stock
2. Unlimted (on any track other than BG North side)
3.Minis
4. USS
5.DSS
6.LSS
7.Mods
8. 4WD Trucks

If the following classes all died off I wouldn't miss them

9.Lt Unlimited
10.Super Farm
11. Semi
12. SSD Trucks
12. TWD

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 18, 2022 02:30PM
1) Pro Stock
2) DSS
3) Mini
4) DSS4x4
5) LSS
6) Unlimited
7) Mod

Gap to 8
8) Semi

9) OSS

10) Lt Unlim (is it even a class anymore?)
11) 4x4
12) Super Farm
13) TWD (only watch for Russ Nichols)

Bottom four- Truck classes

1. Super Farm
2. Fwd
3. Mod
4. Dss
5. Mini
6. Oss
7. Semi
8. Lss
9. Twd
10. Ps
11. Unl
12. Lt Unl
13. DSS4x4

(Class favorite order is subject to change)

As others say, I would watch any class, any day. Yet, if we lossed Lt UNL and DSS4x4, I wouldn't miss them. Unlimiteds are fun, but they just have SOOO much horsepower it is hard to hook up to the track these days.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 24, 2022 03:52AM
This is just a question out of the blue, but what makes a spectator watch hot farm or llss over super farm? excluding the alkys in llss, they all pretty much sound the same, don't they? Why is super farm usually at the bottom? Just a question.

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 24, 2022 07:51AM
Because there is no power in a super farmer. they snuff them out ALL the TIME!!!

Re: Ranking GN classes. May 24, 2022 12:11PM
Sounds like you are 10 years out of date. BTW - sometimes you need to pick a gear that snuff’s the engine in an attempt to get the most distance.

No they don't. Not even close. Years ago yes, but as someone who sees them pull all the time due to the area I'm in I can tell you they rarely ever snuff out anymore.
