Hello Guys, I'm looking to build a John Deere 4030 to pull in a 6500-7000 lb hot farm class. The class has a 360 cubic inch limit with turbo, water injection etc. Any info, suggestions, or input will be greatly appreciated.

The 4030 is a 3020 based rear with a wet clutch, I do not know how robust the trans is. Custom trans gears will likely be one off’s but doable. I imagine you could do a 3 speed with a dry clutch like the 4010/4020’s are setup.
What’s your turbo rule? That’s going to set the power level.
I’ve heard that the big Dubuque or German built transmission and rear are stronger than the 3020 sized Waterloo trans. There’s a fellow out of Connecticut I believe that pulls a 2950 or 55 badged tractor in the NY light hot farm class.
Then the fun begins putting a 359 together to take that abuse. The tough part is you have to run with the B series cummins and DT360’s which have a way better performance support.

I was thinking of going with the pro fab transmission that can be installed in the trans case.

A 4010 can get pretty light. I know of one that used to pull in 5,000 lb class before roll cages were required. It did have an aluminum flywheel and aluminum brake plates behind the planetaries. The ones made in 1961 were lighter.

Im not familiar with a 4030 rear end but I have made gears for the 3010 and 3020. They were used behind v8 gas motors making about 800 hp. They are known to break the stub axles coming out of the differential. They also like to break the differential. We had to put 4 spider gears in one to get it to hold up. This was with a gas motor and a turbo diesel will make roughly twice the torque that a gas motor will make. Torque it what likes to break transmissions and rear ends not hp.

So you’re going to use a 4030 then and a 359 engine? Is tractor synchro or quad range transmission? Any idea of turbo size limits or what kind of power anyone else in the class is making ?

I’d like to find a quad range transmission but I know where a tractor is with a synch range transmission but I don’t want to use that I’m leaning towards using the profab I saw on there website! I think the turbo is a s300 frame with a 3” in and 4” out water injection is allowed and an intercooler.

At that weight you can use the 4010/4020 transmission and rear housing.

I’m not sure a 4020 based rear even lightened up with a tube frame would make 6500. Mine is 7800 lbs empty with steel rim and 20.8’s. A 4010 based setup, maybe you could make 6500-7000 lbs with a lighter 359 engine, but you probably won’t much if any movable weight.

As far as I know the 4030 was never made with a dry clutch, at least as a production model. I do suspect that the early 30 series prototypes with synchro transmissions were built that way. I have a very early 4230 TM and it shows a dry clutch, but I do not believe they were ever made beyond a pre production model.

I believe the only 30 series dry clutches were in the power shift and they were more of a torsional dampener ; the 30 series synchro and quads were the perma clutch (wet).

My sons stock 4010 will make 6500 with 18.4-38 tires and steel wheels

The synchro has a dry clutch from the factory, saves you buying a bell housing for that purpose. I stand corrected these are all wet clutch.

You will not be able to do a Profab box trans inside the housing you are speaking of.

Question: Will a 3020 rear and trans bolt to 4030 engine? I see from an earlier post that basically the 4030 is a 3020 with a wet clutch.

Darren Rursch has a wet clutch that will take 900+ hp. Atlas can make you hardened gears and a billet input shaft.
