Gearing for 12 mph September 22, 2023 09:42AM
What are you guys doing for gearing in a 12mph class in a 1066 for example. 2.4/2.4/2.6 ?

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 22, 2023 03:48PM
Depends on ring/pinion, engine modifications like cubic inches, fuel, air, rpms and if its got a TA or straight shaft and tire size…..I think 34/39 would be good or even a 2.8 gear……again, it depends on a lot of what is done or will be done to it.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 06:17AM
you need to be able to have extra speed, available

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 07:35AM
High 2nd with TA forward & enough mojo to tote it will be competitive in 12mph

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 07:40AM
High 2nd TA forward is only around 11 mph at 2800 rpm with factory gearing.... Thats good for bottom of the pack... You need a gear between 2nd and 3rd to be competitive.

already been said, most things are common sense

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 04:10PM
2.8 gear with 69-70” tires, at 2950rpm is around 14mph high TA. Stock 3rd and stock cm is 16mph on the low side ta with 69-70” tires at 2950rpm, stock 3rd with 23/50 low side cm is around 17mph 69-70” tires at 2950rpm.
Really depends on the OP’s setup.
High 2nd is not going to cut it no matter the R&P for 12mph, not enough wheel speed, stock high 2nd is barely enough for 8mph with a 13/49 R&P with above tires and rpms.

Looks like you've been using the Wipeout mph calculator, I have been as well since your advise from an earlier post, thank you, it's a great resource. Curious when you speak of a 69-70 tire are you speaking of a 20.8-38 or some sort of 42" rubber ? I've been use 66" calculating in for some squat a bit and I've been able to match my real life mph performance to my charted outputs with stock gearing. Curious if your performancesite vs. chart match up for you.

Yes sir, I have! Yes, 20.8r38 radials, I had some tires that were taller than that but sold them and I’ve also had 151’s that were probably what your 66” range is and I could tell the difference. I’m actually in the process of a build now so no real life experiences to custom gears but in the stock geared tractor I have now have matched fairly close track dependent, otherwise I think 2nd hi in mine without load is 12.3-12.4 which is close enough. Ultimately, track conditions will make a difference no matter what you do.
Thanks and good luck.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 02:39PM
In my area you'd better have a 16-17 mph gear to pull a 12 mph class..If not you wont be competitive.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 23, 2023 03:14PM
2+2 2nd works good which is 3 teeth faster than straight 2nd.Some guys run 3rd TA if you have enough beans.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 24, 2023 01:18AM
Thanks to all that have replied, I agree with above posts that faster than 12 mph capabilities are needed. I guess maybe my question should have been how fast, 13,14, 15mph. Looks like opinions vary based on tractor capabilities. I have pulled 3rd TA back, a 15.5 capable gear, I have the hp, just maybe not the driver skill yet to stay below 12mph, looking for a more driver friendly option I guess.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 24, 2023 01:26AM
15 or 16mph is ideal.

I'm eyeing up a gear(2.5 in my case) that will produce 15.2 ta ahead for the second gear slot vs. 15.5 3rd ta back like I've done. I'm hoping to come out of the hole easier with less rpm and the ta back, then shift ta ahead (rpms still low) then work in the throttle from this point.

Learning the tractor personality to match the driver, balance and more, - all the power and speed does no good not harnessed right

That is precisely what I'm trying to do, I have my balance down, I can't pull off 3rd gear consistently without a dq, 2nd is to slow, trying to get my custom gear ratio right the first time if I can to match my hp and driving skill/style.

Re: Gearing for 12 mph September 24, 2023 06:06AM
That would work well. I have a 15 mph gear in mine with no torque. It does well.

That is what I'm hoping for, next is to decide what to put in 1st gear slot. 2.1 or 2.2?
