Talking at the diner, the subject came up if the sport is really growing ?.we talked about ntpa in 1984 vs 2024 amount of pullers at the state, region,gn level.
Do either of you guys have a way/means to answer this,we jumper the 1984 classes together to compare with today's, as follows
1984. 2024
55mod. Lt unlm
55/75 mod. Mod
95 mod. Unlm
10/12 pro. Pro
55 ss. Lt ss
75/95 ss. Dss/unlss
4x4(58,62) 4x4
Twd(58,62) twd
Mini(1550. Mini
1800)
Can you guy provide a accurate number of how many different pullers hooked in these classes as a comparison if the sport is truly growing..this would include all lower 48 states to draw numbers from

Good question. I would preface by saying, for example, at the US Nationals NHRA race they would have had 30something top fuelers, maybe more at that time. The most prestigious dirt late model tace, the World 100, would have had over 200 entries. NASCAR would have had 50 or 60 entries for the Daytona 500, and Indy Cars would have likely had 40 something entries for the Indy 500 (this year 35 trying for 33 spots).

My point is across the board there are fewer competitors at the highest level of most motorsports in the US than 40 years ago. Mose on puling numbers later...

I can get a rough estimate on today's numbers, but I was -11 years old in 1984 lol.

It's an impossible task. Brent and Dan are keepers of the largest possible database, but reporting from 40 years ago is nigh on impossible. Pulling didn't have the likes of a weekly publication that permitted the reporting of draglist.com (which still isn't perfect). Too much of it has been tribal knowledge. Further, there is a complication in defining health of the sport in the numbers you defined. Many pass through a plethora of subsets of these. I'd argue pulling is greater than it was. I'd also argue that it is far more diffused and by that measure more difficult to quantify as desired. Lots and lots of fractional groups all performing at a high level.

I can get you one year away for a direct comparison. Go to youtube. Type "1985 Tomah." Several videos of heavy mod and ss classes will pop up. If you type 1986 or 1987 Tomah, several complete sessions with most of the above classes will appear. Count how many in each class and compare with today.

I've got class numbers from 1984, but not individual entries from that year. Results are very incomplete. NTPA doesn't even have them.
