john deere 4230 - 4430 wet clutch August 06, 2010 06:15AM
Why does a 4430 runs clutch pressure a little higher than a 4230, why is that when you raise the pressure above 200 on a 4230 the filter blows off and a 4430 will hold up to 250 or even a little higher with no trouble, my 4230 broke a grade 8 bolt at 200 psi. I am running a complete SFI wet clutch five disk and don't want to slip, most likely int he area of 800 - 900 hp.

Be sure you are shimming the back spring pack and not the front to adjust clutch pressure! If you keep shimming the front port you will blow the cover off every time without getting your clutch pressure up.

What do you mean, can you specify a little more on the difference between the 2 adjustments?

The rear port (the one closest to the axle) is the filter relief setting, and it sets the pressure that is maintained on the charge side of the system and regulates return oil from the oil cooler. The front port(towards the flywheel) adjusts clutch pressure and does not effect system pressure. Of course the filter relief pressure has to be equal to or greater than the desired clutch pressure, but it usualy is anyways. I believe stock pressures for oth are around 180psi.

where exactly is the rear port and what does it look like. Any pics or diagrams?

There is a difference between the stock pressure of a 4230 and the 4430, stock pressures are about 125 to 130 PSI. on a 4230 and 175 on a 4430. I have a friend who is getting around 250 out of his 4430. Our 4230 blows the cover at around 200. Does any one know what the changes are between the two at the stock pressures? Are there any parts that can be swapped to make them the same?

Both tractors use the same pistons and valves. The only diffrence I can see is the internal spring under the clutch valve. This does of course assume both tractors are of the same vintage. There are 2 diffrent sizes of pistons for both tractors depending on serial numbers.

Both tractors are early serial numbered tractors. The operating pistons are both of the same design. I have not compared any internal parts in the clutch valve or the oil return manifold to see if there is any difference.
