To stroke or not stroke that is the question? November 30, 2010 05:28AM
Was wondering about anybody's experience's on a stock JD 466 vs a 5.5 inch stroked 404 to get to 466 cubic inches. Is it worth the money to go that route? Thanks, TS

why stroke it, just drop in the 466 pistons, the crank is the same stroke on both engines

JD4455ssd DING DING DING that is correct!!! Were all trying to put more torque in our JD motors. If that red @#$%& didnt have a torque in the tranny we wouldnt have this problem. I was always told your supposed to put THE TORQUE IN THE MOTOR NOT IN THE TRANNY!! BITCHES

The other downside to the 404 is you are stuck with using small valves do to the smaller bore

That, and most 404 blocks will only accept a Roosamaster, without machine work, correct?

DING DING DING CORRECT

is someone forgeting the p-pump ed 404 that was in a 4630 or the 7700 combine ??? that will be the one u looking for????....IHSMOKE

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 01, 2010 01:38PM
they never made such a thing, the 4630 had the 3000 series a pump, 7700 combines had the a pump (probably 2000 series).

4010 puller Good call I think tats right. But didnt a 4240 have a 404 with a A pump?

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 01, 2010 01:54PM
no.. 4040, 4240 had rotary pump and 466

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 01, 2010 02:05PM
4430.. 7700 combine had a 404 with a turbo.. but can't remember which pump.. guessing its an A pump (that would be about the same HP as the 4430.. (128HP on the 7700 Combine..)

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 01, 2010 01:54PM
Whats the difference between 2000 and 3000 a pumps and which one is better for pulling?

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 01, 2010 02:22PM
Stock A 2000 pump (4430/7700T) has 9.5 mm plungers, timing of the individual plungers is done by an adjustable screw. Stock A 3000 pump (4630) has 10 mm plungers, plunger timing is done by thickness of shims. As to which one is better for pulling? Ask your ADS.

most pump shops say 3000 series, I think their cams are much larger (3000 series). Im not sure what else is different.

I would use a 466 block out of a 4850 JD with the P pump hole. Then put thick wall sleeves with 4.25 bore an a 5.50 stroke crank then you dont have to use the old 404 block. By using the 4850 block you have the crank driven oil pump witch is better setup then the old cam drive oil pump anyway. Just my 2 cents

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 02, 2010 05:25AM
I agree with the 466 block but custom sleeves and pistons are cashy and you are still limited to a small valve head. I just wondered if a 404 with 5.5 inch stroke was a better 466 than a standard 466 bore and stroke? (even with the small valves but some porting done)

Couldn't you notch the liner in order to use bigger valves? Or would that not work? Is there something wrong with notching your liners?

Re: To stroke or not stroke that is the question? December 03, 2010 03:00AM
I know of some badger state LLSS tractors that run the 55 series head then notch the liner like you are saying, they are running under a 410cid limit. Just would be nice if there was a way of making sure the liners wouldn't turn.

I've heard of guys notching liners and and pinning them so they will not turn but they also said the air coming in and hitting that flat spot in the liner doesn't work real well. Maybe someone who has tried this will chime in. TS
