4430 clutch January 24, 2011 07:16AM
wanting to put a stock 4630 clutch whick has 3 drive discs in a 4430. will this work, and which finger setting do you use, 4630, or 4430? thanks

Re: 4430 clutch January 24, 2011 12:33PM
Unless you intend to make a spacer plate to bolt between the block and the clutch hosuing to make up the extra height of the flywheel/coverplate assembly from the 4630 I don't think you can make it work.

Re: 4430 clutch January 24, 2011 04:13PM
you can machine 100 thousands off the front plate that clamps the clutch together & put 2 pto floaters & 3 disks in & use 4440 specs. & it makes a nice clutch 1 thing it will do is shift a little hard as there is a little more surface area to stop

Re: 4430 clutch January 24, 2011 09:54PM
What about using a complete clutch and flywheel from 8440?

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 02:31AM
i m pretty sure you lose the use pto if you go with the 8440

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 02:47AM
So with this setup you do not loose your pto? What kind of horsepower does that handle then? I have heard about shaving some off the floaters on a stock 4430 clutch in order to fit in another disc in...is this possible?

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 04:33AM
yes you will still have your pto & i would say you would be good up to 350 to 400hp with the 3 disk & 800 to 1000 hp with the 5 disk

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 04:01AM
Can you use this set up on a stock 4430 cluth to make it a 5 disk

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 04:31AM
yes you can make it a 5 disk if u fix up the clutch control valve to direct oil from the clutch port to the pto port you have to weld up between the 2 ports & cross drill it & plug off the pto valve

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 02:33AM
also cornfed u need to up the psi to 205

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 05:57AM
I"ve converted my wet clutch into a 4 disk, all the work has be completed from welding the hubs together to pluging off the pto clutch and brake ports. i would like to turn up the pressure but not sure how to. the book tells you to shim the small plug on the clutch regulating vaule housing, closes to the clutch housing but i've read that you should shim the bigger plug on the clutch regulating housing. Can anyone tell me the right way. Thanks.

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 06:30AM
according to john deere parts book. the only difference in the two clutchs is the two floaters in the drive clutch, and the two innerr hubs, and three of the fingers. all other parts are the same, including the housing. i farm with the tractor and use the pto and pull it some and it slips alittle. i posted on here because i knew if it could be done a puller has tried it. thanks for all the feed back.

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 09:04AM
U want to shim the one towards the front of the tractor on the clutch valve body (Under the battery box and step) there on the same side the hydraulic filter is on. I think you only install a shim the the one rear of that if you cannot get the pressure high enough by shimming the front plug.

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 09:48AM
Chris the plate you would need to machine 100 from is it the plate that holds the fingers or not? I guess im not sure of the plate your refurring to there is like 3 plates in this thing not including the thin clutch plates. Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 12:59PM
jjj the plate i m refering to is the 1 that is right against the flywheel it has the 3 square head bolts that go all the way through to the 3 fingers for the trans. clutch take 100 thousands off the face the disk runs on with a surface grinder so its smooth

Re: 4430 clutch September 08, 2011 12:30AM
when making it a four disk clutch how do you get the clutch oil to the pto side???

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 06:35AM
i just read through the posts again, do i need to put in a 4630 flywheel also, or will the 4430 one work since the covers are the same?

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 08:15AM
chris is right i have a clutch just as he says 3 disc one added with 2 pto tied for 5 holds great you can slip it out of the hole in 8 th and it holds

Chris, You seem very knowledgeable about these tractors. I asked a ? early on this post about rasing the clutch pressure at the clutch reglating housing. I would appreciate your thoughts on this ?. Thanks !

Re: 4430 clutch/ ? for Chris R January 25, 2011 12:49PM
Hey Cornfed. My original post claim still stands. You can't put a 4630 clutch assembly in a 4430 without making a spacer to go between the clutch housing and the block. If you look at the parts book you will see a 4630 flywheel is diffrent from a 4430. The reason is the 4430 flywheel is deeper to accomodate the extra clutch and floater plate. In order to put the assembly in without a custom spacer you would have to lower the fingers a lot in order to be able to get the clutch to release, and assuming there is enough adjustment in them to be able to do that and get it to fit, then you will have a clutch that won't allow for any wear as the fingers will be hitting the cover plate and not clamping the clutch in no time. For what it is worth if you really need to keep the PTO independent it is possible to get 4 clutches in the traction clutch section of a 4430 clutch assmebly, but it takes a lot of machine work and you have to be super careful rolling the tractor together not to drop a clutch and pinch it. I see lots of engines wiped out in these tractors by guys pulling them together with the clutch housing bolts when a disk is pinched.

Re: 4430 clutch/ ? for Chris R January 25, 2011 12:51PM
you shim up the short bottom plug on the clutch control valve housring witch is the front plug when u take it out there will be shims in there already put a guage in the port stamped clutch before you take it out then you know where your at. each shim is approx. 5psi take it up to 200 to 205 any higher & you will break the filter houseing bolt.

Re: 4430 clutch/ ? for Chris R September 10, 2011 08:42AM
I have a 4430 that I can only get 192 psi on the clutch pressure. No matter how many shims you install the pressure will not climb. Any reason why this is?

Re: 4430 clutch/ ? for Chris R September 10, 2011 10:27AM
It wouldnt have anything to do with a weak transmission pump would it? On early tractors you can check pressure of it by putting a gauge in the plug above where you check clutch pressure. It should be like 8-10 psi with engine at 2000 rpm with warm oil. Later tractors require installing a t and gauge in back where filter is at that regulating valve. It can also be checked by filling a bucket with oil to check gallons per minute. Its listed in manual how to do this.

Re: 4430 clutch January 25, 2011 12:42PM
use the 4430 the 4630 is different

Re: 4430 clutch September 09, 2011 03:56AM
Regarding the filter bolt. Have heard that these bolts & housing often fail, & that guys block the filter off with a plate. If this is done,
is it nessessary to reroute the oil that would no longer have a filter to pass through?

Re: 4430 clutch September 10, 2011 07:01AM
NO , the oil just wouldn't get filtered.
