DT466 help or opinions? March 02, 2011 05:57PM
I am wanting to put a 466 in my 1066, but before i do i would like to put a good cam in it but dont know who would be the best for the set up i gonna try and run? oh and what do i need to do to my pistons or will the valves clear? Im going to run a model 100 pump that i got from schieds diesel with 3LM turbo at 3000 rpms. i wanting to build it for a open A pump class(3000rpm) but dont have the funds to get an A pump or good turbo yet so im going to use what i got for now, but i have saved up some money to go ahead and do the motor right befor i put it in. thanks for any info that you can help me with.

Call Vogel on supliers page for cam. Cut your pistons, polish rods, balance them, Don"t forget fire rings, you are good to go.

Oh yeah, don"t do like I did and waste money on a + head. Find a 426 head to spend your money on, for on down the road.

well i got a motor out of a bus, I think it is out of a 92 or 93 so is their a chance it is a 426 head and would this also be a roller cam motor its a 468 block. i guess i need to go look to the lower shed and get some numbers off the block and head to see what i really got. What do you mean by pollishing the rods. thanks everbody for the good advice it is greatly appreciated!
Oh what is the best way to do fire rings i hear people talk about puting grove in top of sleeve will that try to push the sleeve down? I dont know much about these blocks? so whats the best way to fire ring one and who has the best head gasket and rings to get. Thanks

You can buy a head gasket and fire rings from about any engine builder. Order an extra set or two of fire rings from the start, so your ready if you ever have to pull the head off. Ask some questions so you know how far to machine the sleeve. I "think" the recomended crush on the ring is .012 to .014 but ask for sure. Do some looking around, there is one set of 466 pistons that are a higher compression than the rest. For 3000 RPM and a small turbo that would be my choice. I have seen them but I dont know the part number. Call ARP and put in aftermarket rod bolts. Tell them it is for a 400 series IH and they will have the bolt number. They are only around 75 bucks if you buy them direct. And lastley, IMO, if you get a 426 head, for what you have told us don't let anyone talk you into doing a bunch of headwork. Thats my opinion.

He"s right on the head, just clean it up a little. Hypermax has rings and head gasket with sleeve cutting instructions, ask for them. Polishing rods really doesn"t help performance but gets rid of sharp edges, and helps with balancing.

Call Jeff Suites 1-217-595-5595 He will have everything you need for the setup you are talking about. He builds some of the strongest 3000rpm hotfarm ih 466 motors out there. Great guy to deal with and knows his stuff when it comes to 3000 rpm ih motors.
