deere 8440 clutch in 4230 June 29, 2011 10:01PM
Does anybody know if a clutch from a 8440 deere will work in a 4230 deere?

Why would you want to? You can make a good clutch out of the 4230 clutch. Add a disk and plate and machine the backing plate.

I was trying to avoid machine work. The 8440 clutch looked lighter and simple, 4 disc instead of 3. At this point i don't need the pto. I read a previous post on here that a guy used one in his 4430 but he was having slippage problems. I was hoping somebody would be able to tell me that this would or wouldn't work.

you can make the 4230 clutch a 4 disc with no machining. use the 2 pto and 2 traction disc that are already there. tig the 2 hubs together and change the oil routing and you are done. very easy to do

There are a few threads with some info.. easiest way to get the oil to both clutches is to remove part of the lube reduction valve.. you have to plug off a few ports too..
If you have any question you can PM me or email me..

I tried this already. It worked ok for a couple of years then I went to a 5 disc tied together machined off an eighth of an inch on the center divider plate. was alot better deal

How did you set your clutch fingers? Also, what didn't you like about this set up?

It wouldn't hold after I made more horsepower and more speed. I had even upped the pressure to over 200lbs. Would take off fine but wouldn't hold at the end. Was pulling at 10500 and 11500 at that time.
