Ok, harvest and the holidays are over with, so now there's a lot of people back at their keyboards. So, your task is to try and help me find out more information on the "Little Elephant" once owned by Robert Elliott. Any additional photos, any information, or any surviving relatives that I can contact concerning Robert's tractor. Look at the earlier posting in this thread and see if you

Well the single engine modifieds (similar to economy hot rods) do well in northern Indiana, just not down here where I live. The area of Indiana that I live in (west central/southwestern) use to be a "Hot Bed" for modified tractors of all shapes and weight classes, but not anymore. I ran the modified we use to own at a local pull just to make a test run. The crowd went nuts when I made the pass a

Modifieds are all but dead at most county fairs in mid to southwestern Indiana. About anywhere from I-74 south to the river and the Illinois/Indiana state line east. Yes, there are HSTPA, PPL and NTPA pulls in these areas with modifieds, but not at most county fairs. Seems like all that most pulling fans want to see in this area is smokers and trucks. I'm not insulting the fans, that's

Carl,
No, I think you're on track. I never thought about it from that vantage point. It would probably relate to very similar MPH on the track between the LLSS and the light single N/A engine modifieds. I am sure that most of the LLSS produce higher horsepower and torque numbers than a modifieds N/A engines, and definitely at a lower RPM..

Hey Carl,
What kind of horsepower are some of these LLSS running, and at what weight? I thought we run fairly well with our single engine modified at 5,800 lbs. I figured our engine was just at or slightly over 1,000 horsepower, but I couldn't pull much more than a 43 to 1. I'm just asking some questions here to educate myself.

Todd, glad to see you're still kicking as well. Hopefully you and Tarry are doing well. I realize you're right Todd. It still takes a lot of skill and experience to handle todays "Big Horsepower". On the other hand, you know it's not all about horsepower as you noted. I'm not saying that there's not some skilled drivers out there, because there are. You're included i

You make some valid points. You are correct in reaction time. Today you have no time for error with runs that last between 12 and 20 seconds. In years past, 30 to 35 seconds weren't uncommon. Todays pulling trucks and tractors would likely not survive long on the sleds of yesteryear. Many of the old sleds were by todays standards nothing less than impossible to start (I could tell many stori

I would suggest staying away from the smaller Oliver transmissions and differentials. If you're planning on running a BB Chevy with a reasonable amount of horsepower, then look for a Cockshutt 40, 50 (Coop E-4, E-5), 560 or 570. They don't get much tougher from the factory than the Cockshutt's were. The transmissions were a little weak, but the differentials are probably one of the

Puller 2, What the fans don't realize, and some of the younger pullers is the fact that were losing skill in tractor and truck pulling. I know, "if the music's to loud, you're too old" adage. Well I guess I'm too old then. I went to my first tractor pull sometime around 1967 or 1968. I fell in love with the sport with the first tractor I saw go down the track. I've mainly

I just got some information from a posting I made on another pulling site. Kenny C. was nice enough to post a photo and gave some information on the tractor I bought that is pictured in the previous posting I made. It was called "Little Elephant" and owned by Robert Elliott. Kenny said that there was a photo of it located on the TNT Motorsports Facebook page. The second photo is provided thanks t

OK gang, I need some help here. I purchased an old modified tractor (F-30) to restore off of Dwayne & Sabrina Harrell from Sevierville TN about a year ago. They bought the tractor from Gary Cook of Springfield TN. I finally talked to Gary Cook last Friday night trying to find older photos and information on the tractor. I thought it was one of the original modifieds that Gary had built (and that&

Hey Goose, does your group have a web site, or is there at least someplace I can get a copy of the classes and rules for the classes? I've got a close friend of mine asking about local classes and I told him I have no idea.

Does anyone know which old pulling tractors will be at this years Tractor Pullers Reunion at Penfield Illinois this coming weekend? In previous years the Allison Team UB, Bill Newlon's G-1000 and Lloyd McVey's Super Banana where there. Also a few old Super Stockers. I just wondered if anyone knew. Sadly there wasn't a very good turnout last year, hopefully it will be better this ye

Did anyone else out there by chance save a video that had a link posted here on Pulloff of a pull at Alton Illinois in 1973? I think it was posted on a Facebook page or Facebook account by someone named John Dames. I had it saved on my favorites, but when I went to view it the other day, it was gone. Excellent old video/film of some classic tractors such as Green Rat, Tarantula, Allison Team etc.

Stan, I couldn't agree more. We pulled with Indiana Modified Tractor Pullers Association (now Indiana Pulling League) for a little over four years. Great class, and a wonderful group of competitors. We got out for numerous reasons, but distance was becoming a problem for us. Working a job at the time with little ability for time off was causing problems (no longer have that job) was also ano

You're welcome Stan. I don't know everything about pulling, but I do know quite a bit about some of the old modifieds in west central and southwestern Indiana, also east central and southeastern Illinois. I use to go with both a modified and super stock puller to a lot of pulls and pulled some myself back in the 70's, early 80's, then again in the late 2,000's. I'm j

Todd,
First off, how have you and Tarry been doing? How's business going? I hope all is well with both of you. I know that when I used a Ford 6000 in my modified back in the early to mid 80's, we run it directly into the differential pinion with no problems. Are the 4600 & older 4000's able to do this, or do you they have a reverse rotation? I'm just satisfying my o

Larry Jones's "X-Rated Bad Cat" used a 5000 Ford differential. You're correct that he didn't use the transmission, but ran the driveline directly into the differential pinion. You might want to double check, but if memory serves me right, the pinion shaft may turn in the opposite rotation of most pinions. I faintly remember that right after they built the tractor they went to the f

Thanks Travis for the info. I'd love to see more photos of the "Under Rat". I always loved the Rat Fink figure on the sides of the dash panel. Does anyone out there have any more photos of Joe Tichenor's "Under Rat"? I've posted a photo that was on the Facebook group "Good 'ol days tractor pulling" for all of you to see, but I'd like better ones if possible. Does anyone know if Joe is still alive? I watched the "Under Rat" make many runs back in the early to mid 70's here in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Alway

Well said Carl!!!!! There is nothing wrong with reasonable questions on this board, that is what it's here for. I use to tell my students; "The only dumb question, is the one you don't ask"! As you said, Saving vendors time away from the phone helps them to keep working, thus completing work for customers. Carl, how are you coming along on your tractor?

I agree with much of what been said about tri-axle trailers. Tri-axle trailers are very hard on tires, especially if you're prone to jack knifing them (turning short). I think you'll be happier with dual wheeled tandems, than a tri-axle trailer. I do agree on one statement made on a tri-axle trailer. I definitely think they pull easier than a tandem with dual wheels. Hope everyone'
