Small Cube Deere January 05, 2016 03:35PM
I have been seeing more talk about the llss class and I would like to know what the smallest cubed 6 cylinder Deere was. I would like to be around 315 cubes so that I can run 2 chargers on Diesel. Any help would be great. If it matters it will be bolted to a 3020 rear.

I am doing the 329 engine right now. I am going alcohol but definately twin diesel was a close second choice. That motor was used n the 3130 , 4030, and in a combine . 359 was in the industrial loaders. Cross flow head 4.330 stroke . 3.925 " bore and you would be at 315.

The Clevite book (and I recall seeing it in an old NAPA catalog too) shows a 303D in the 329/359 family. 3.858 bore x 4.328 stroke

Any 4 cylinder Deere block, that would take a 466 bore & stroke?

the 303 gas bolts to a 2010 I would like to find a diesel but so far haven't , I don't know what a 3020 would cost but there are a couple of 4010 rear and trans here with a 404 dsl and a 4010 gas torn down. take 2500 the 4010 stuff or take 1500 for the 303 and the 2010 rear and trans, make some one a deal on all the deere stuff.

Any advantage to 329/359 Deere over the Cummins 5.9? Whats it take to make a 3020 rear/trans strong enough for pulling?

Here's my pros and cons. I am doing alcohol on the 329 Jd motor. A 4.250 bore puts you at 368 which is perfect in the llss rules. I have lots of 4.250 stuff around from my other tractor so it was perfect for me. I like the cross flow head possibility but the combine head is definately the best one to get looks sweet.

Pros for twin diesel is a liitle less bore would get you 315 easily.

Cons are for diesel they had pencil injectors, I can't see why they can't be opened up. They had a small bolt (pin)holding the timing gear which gives trouble. I would imagine the Deere builders out there have already had solutions for both. The flywheel side of the crank would need more bolts added to it. Only 4 bolts and one dowel.

I liked the bore and stroke combination and it is a sleeved block. The cummins is a great motor definately easier to build but sometimes being different is fun too.

Good luck. If anyone builds one on twins diesel I would love to see it. As far as what it bolts up to ag wise I do not know I am not going that route.

Any of the 300 series John Deere engines including 3. 4, and 6 cylinders can be bolted to the small block Waterloo 400 series clutch housing pattern using the 4030 or the right combine adaptor/rear main seal housing. Theses short stroke six cylinder motors 303, 329 and 359/5.9 all have the 4.3 stroke and can really go upstairs on RPM. Bore on the 303 was 3.875, 329 4.02, and 359 4.19. Used to be a tractor out of Canada that was called the Canadian Mist that ran the 329 motor. My concern is the 1/2 size bolts on mains caps but I suspect a good girdle would take care of that. I have a running 359 out of a combine if anybody is interested. DW

What's the head like. Is it the one without the 2 cast ports is the side fully open? I would be interested in that.

The 300 series cross flow head with the bolt on intake manifold, (That looks like an IH) that has very large individual intake ports is actually a "marine" application head. This same head was used on a 9400 combine 6.8/ liter/414 cubic inch 300 series engine for a short time. Head bolt patterns are all the same and will fit any of the six cylinder 300 series 6 cylinder engines. DW

I can get one from a dealer but if you know anyone getting rid of one let me know.

Re: Small Cube Deere January 07, 2016 08:12AM
So I take it Deere doesn't have a 4 cylinder motor that can get to 360 ci? Does anyone? With a good head?

Re: Small Cube Deere January 08, 2016 02:45AM
If one were to take a 3010/3020 Diesel engine and install 466 sleeves like they do on the 4010/4020 blocks it would be you up to 310 ci. As far as a good head or crank, I make no guarantees.

Is there any info on what Moore Kentucky Sled Hunter is running for a combo. I have only seen videos of this tractor but drool every time I watch them. I believe I heard they run a 359 Dubuque engine with a 4010 chassis??? using spark plugs. If memory serves me right there is also a 8130ish JD also pulling LLSS on the BOB circuit, what is there combo??

Re: Small Cube Deere January 07, 2016 05:37AM
Early 4010 gas was 302 CI. Some LLSS rules allow swapping of factory cylinder heads allowing spark
plugs on a diesel shortblock. Could you reverse this and put diesel head on a gas shortblock ? Of course
the first upgrade to this setup would be the factory replacement seven main block. Winking
