Looking into mechanical fuel supply, trying to decide between a gear pump and vane pump.
This will be belt driven, Is there any reason to pick one or the other? |

I use and sell both Aviaid gear pumps and vane pumps. Have converted some from vane to gear because could not supply enough for the demands of the injection pump. That plays big role in what you use. Make sure it can handle the needs of your injection pump. |

when a pump is rated in cc's what is the time frame for the given amount
for example 950 cc pump is only a quart but you burn more than that going down the track. what size supply pump would one need for that amount of fuel |

Let's use 1000cc as example.
That means 1000cc per plunger per 1000 strokes. Pump rotates half engine speed so a engine at 2000 rpm pump turns 1000rpm Convert cc to ounces 1000cc = 33.8 ounces multiply by 6 plungers = 202 ounces. That's 1.57gal per minute your supply pump needs for 1000cc injection pump at 2000 engine rpm. That's how I base my pump capacity. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/23/2018 09:33AM by Koepke7810. |

What's the calculation to get 6.33 gpm from 202 oz? |

My bad.... lol......1.57gpm
1.5 gal in 202 ounces. As rpm goes up so does demand so if you run 4000 rpm engine you need at least 3gpm supply pump Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/23/2018 09:21AM by Koepke7810. |

Can a pump be too big? I figure if it was it would probably crest extra heat in the fuel?
I know people say use volume to keep the p-pumps cool, but I didn’t know how much is too much |

You don't want to short your injection pump, the pump only uses all that fuel at max fuel. Usually last few feet of the pull so don't want to be lacking any fuel supply.
I use offices in return not check valves on pump to keep fuel circulating, yes it builds heat. With only short run time not big concern but if fuel is getting hot a fuel cooler not bad idea |

I was planning on using a miniture relief valve on the return side of the pump |

I've used the Bosch spring loaded relief like used on a lot of Mack applications before easily adjustable. |

I already try many adjustable return and they don’t like flow variations. The best way is use a return with a small hole, and use a pressure regulator before the pump.
We use a Vickers vane belt driven pump with a 800cc ppump and the pressure is way more stable. Good luck |
